Potomac River Fish Off!

Featured Replies

Yeah I dont think most of those guys fish the river much.

It isnt but 3-3 1/2 miles the stretch and I think ya'll keep it on the river and don't go out past the mouth to Belmont Bay, I think that will keep it fair given boat/motor size disadvantages.

I guess you could take it as far as Occ bay where it meets potomac, leesylvania etc but then big boats would have a huge disadvant.  keep it to the river n no wakes, etc.

No worries about paddling shimmy. I have the typical res setup. 9.9(slightly modified), OMC 12/24 56lb thrust TM, livewell, hummingbird matrix.. We will be plentygood. A large satchel of fish is a given!

I have the typical res setup. 9.9(slightly modified)

meaning a 15hp with 9.9 decals mwahaha

do we have a final count of who is attending?

I now have New Angler and CMatthews in my boat so I am full.

I have fished the Occoquan River several times but this is not the type of area with a lot of secret spots.  Bridge Pilings, docks, old wooden pilings, pads, and rip rap are all visible and hold fish.  If you have a depthfinder then you will definitely see the drop offs that are everywhere.  As you make your way out to Belmont Bay be sure you stay within the channel markers or you might find yourself stuck at low tide.  I am going out to have fun and show some people what a world-class fishery the Potomac is, winning is definitely a second priority for me (especially since there is no money on the line :-) ); so if anyone is struggling feel free to ask me and I will show you where and how we have caught our fish.

Even slightly more modified!! I like to think big!!

I was going to say that but I thought that info may be classified...

Nothing on that motor says it's anything other than a 9.9. It's 100% legit

You got a 250 on your jon boat?

Haha, quanjig runs about 150 in it.  Sounds like you all are gonna have a fun time and a great day weatherwise.  Wish I could make it but its tough turning down the opportunity to possibly catch a 50 lb striper.  Good luck and let us know how it goes

By jon boat res standards.....yes........yes I do!!!

"modified" lol!

nothing wrong with keepin it secret. I use to tell people my supra was stock, then they heard the loud cams and huge turbo spool up, was kinda a dead give away at that point. Boat is the same deal, you can say what u want but once a game warden hears it then your busted  :-? From what I understand they can hear the difference in a 15 and a 9.9 especially when your doing 25 mph on the water.

it's all good.  jonny lifeguard can look and listen all he wants! I'm not the first to do it and I'm sure I won't be the last.  been running modified 9.9 for 5 years and never had an issue.  if you go about your business in a respectful manner, you will never have an issue.  the g+f guys on the res are looking for no liscense or people being stupid, I got mine and my mama didn't raise me to be stupid. :D

final head count? rules? 8-3pm?

I vote for 6 fish bags. It appears as though we all have live wells so we can weigh-in at marina. Did some mention they have a scale?

I'm stoked. Can't wait to put faces with names. See everyone tomorrow.

Theres only one problem with that, its illegal to hold tournaments without the proper permits, even a little one like this might draw negative attention, I would advise against all of you weighing in at the marina, weigh your own fish in your boats and keep track would be the best way, best would be to take the picture and just be honest, less stress than being in a livewell for up to 7 hours....

Theres nothing on the line here so why risk killing the fish?

appreciate the opinion. with proper live well management there is no reason to fear fish loss. I think we can easily be discrete with a weigh in. I also do not think the marina will be that busy this time of year. Good luck up north tomorrow.

Not really a tournament ( no monies involved )  Not sure that we need any permits if all we are fishing for are bragging rights.  I was involved with the organization of the tournaments at Fountainhead, and the only reason we needed the insurance and ok from the park authority is that it was an organized event on park property.  this is more like, show up if you can, catch a big one , let's see what you got!!  your concern is appreciated, I think we will be ok.  sure you guys don't wanna get in on this or are you dead set to fish up north??

We're pretty dead set on fishing up north for larger fish, but good luck to you guys out there and as always be safe out there, esp those in smaller vessels unfamiliar with the waters

you guys as well and we need pictures from you two as well

UPDATE:

Boat 1: Soccerplayer07, Matt, Dan

Boat 2: quanjig, Shimmy

Boat 3: RockvilleMDAngler, NewAngler, cmatthews6485

We'll launch from the Occoquan Regional Park at 8am and fish until 3pm. 3pm we will meet back at the ramp for weigh in. We'll weigh 6 fish bags and the heaviest bag wins. I've got a scale that I will bring but anyone else is welcome to bring theirs as well, it would be good to have another one for verification and as a backup.

How's that sound to everyone?

sounds good. i have a scale too.

Good luck all.  I'm rootin for the underdogs rollin Jon boat.

Are ya'll still fishing BIG vs. little?

What is the boundaries?  Leesylv/Potomac, Belmont?

no boundaries! "under dog", he (quanjig) is the best fisherman i know!!!
