First Snakehead of the year

Featured Replies

Went out to my spot for 2 hours today, ended up banging out 10 bass, 1 nice 1.5lb Crappie, a gold fish, and the first snakehead of the year! Caught her on a 4'6" ultralight rod with 4lb FC line, one hell of a fight let me tell you! At first I though I had tail snagged a carp with the crappie tube I was using but those doubts were soon put to rest when she came torpedoing out of the water, I immediate loosened up on my drag as I knew this fish could easily snap the line. I played with here for a good 8 minutes before my buddy landed her for me, she was dissected and her stomach contents examined, she was also full of eggs! If I had to guesstimate I'll be generous and say she was around 24" and 4lbs

Still dont get it..... ;D

Thats a good story to stick to. Hey I guess I wasted my time putting a heater in the tank when I had those fish in an aquarium. If they are surviving these harsh conditions I guess they are here to stay. About fifteen or twenty years ago they sold snake heads in pet stores. Unfortunetly we see the end result. Keep working those "Tubes". Hey speaking of tubes (again) the lure type this time, I ordered some 8 and 10 inch tubes called Tube Jr.'s from Reaction Strike that look like big bass candy. Check em out online.

The variety commonly sold in stores is the Giant, (Channo Micropeltes) which does require warmer water to survive, the Northern is a sub tropical species which is why they can survive our winters.

Ha.  Your accusations are quite ridiculous.

8 and 10 inch tubes? That's sick.

I figure five to seven inch swimbaits work so why not try them. Thai thanks for the National Goegraphic crash course on Snake Heads there. At least I wont leave here empty handed or headed should I say.

I'm always here for a crash course in Ichthyology if you need it  ;)

Nice catch!

and uh..I guess I'm slow cuz I don't get it either....

How big do those sweeties get? I have whacked some fish called Bowfin or commonly called Mudfish in the south that destroy some baits and put up a heck of a fight. They look similar. Bowfin get up to 18 or 20 pounds.

I wouldnt think you would have to be a stunt double in a Cheech and Chong movie to get that one. If you have never done tubes then lets move on. I think its clogged Thai.

So how big did you say?

They can grow over 40" but round here 35-37" is usually where they max out at and those are the males, unlike bass the females typically stay smaller than the males, during the pawning seasons the females will get light and the snakelike pattern on them will really stand out whilst the males get really dark brown.

I guess he's implying that Thai was smoking the whacky tabaccy?

the hints aren't totally random on jeopardy.

I think I have maxed out on cough syrup and i will go read a chapter in Sowbelly, the quest for the world record bass. I read it every winter out of boredom. Its been a stone cold groove gentlemen. See ya in the big bass zone.

Alotof you probably wont get that

Go ask Alex when he's ten feet tall. White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplain. We can use Alex in place of Alice in wonderland. Who's burning at both ends now? The Vapors baby.
