Anyone recently fish Curtis Lake (Stafford, Va)

Featured Replies

Anybody hit up Curtis Lake as of yet? Making a trip down here with my dad in the bass boat tommorrow and just trying to get an idea of what shape the lake is in.

I know with this front coming through the fish are probably going to have backed off some into the off shore cover/trees towards the main lake channel.

Figure we will probably focus most of our efforts on the off shore cover close to or on main lake points near deep water, the cove up by the dam since it has a nice taper to it and a lot of emergent standing timber and probably anywhere where we find a nice tree line in the 12 - 16 foot range.

Looks to be pretty sunny tommorrow and I'd imagine the water is gonna be a tad stained if not fairly stained, that being siad I'd imagine they will be holding pretty tight.

Last time out here I caught a nice 5lber on a Stanley Swim Jig and Rage Tail Lobster so I'm pretty excited about the possibility of another big fish, know they're in here. Any other advice?

sorry to have no real beneficial info for you but i was  thinking about heading down there with my girlfriend since the rivers are high. we'll be in a blue and green kayak.

only been to Curtis lake once and got skunked. your post about the 5lb'er gives me hope! it sure is a fishy looking lake...

Big fruits,

Cool man, we will be in a Lowe's 16ft fishing boat... we like to "call" it a bass boat and it's slowly turning into that as my dad upgrades things but for now it gets the job done and is definitely fun to fish from.

My name is Jason, so if you see us be sure to holler.

Check out this link for more info on the lake:

I found the pic of the one I caught.  I caught her right of the launch, after the pier in 12 - 15 ft of water on a lone standing emergent tree.  Stanley Swim Jig and Rage Tail Lobster was the bait.

Maybe we can help each other out if either one of us is on em'.  See ya man.

Catch anything this weekend Jason ? Im still waiting for my boat to be ready. They are waiting on a part so I gotta wait till tuesday or wednesday  >:( On a sidenote my buddies were slammin 4 pounders from shore this morning on crankbaits. Gimme a holler and I'll fill you in. Can't wait to get out there on the river next week, it's gonna be in the 80 degree range !

Hey dude, I tried to PM, but for some reason you have ignored all PMs from me. Weird.

ANyways, was just trying to see if you had success there. Don't need to know where, or what you threw, just wondering if it will be worth my time.

Oh, and check the PM settings, maybe a mistake, don't know why I'd be blocked. Thanks.

Hey guys,

Went out with my dad Sat morning from 9am til 2:30pm. Lost one, caught one. When we got there water temps at launch were 48 - 49 degrees. Couple of guys there stated that it was 55 - 57 last week.. Nice drop in temps. Winds were gusting at like 5mph, no biggie, til about 12 when they started sustaining 15 - 20... whole lake was getting choppy. We stayed out until 2:30 and beared it. My dad got a couple bites too, one on an Ananconda Worm and another ona jig.

My only fish came off a lone standing tree with emerging branches in about 15' of water. I tossed a 3/8 oz Hack Attack jig with Rage Tail Craw trailer (green pumpkin and orange jig, green pumpkin craw).

Went 2lbs 6ozs.

I lost another nice fish about 20 yards to the right of where I caught my previous pb last year. Bit my Boo Yah Boo jig with Rage Craw trailer (black and blue/matching) as I came over some deep wood and hit as I pulled it over. Sucked it in, felt another tap as it took it in further, reeled in the slack and set the hook but he had dropped it before I got the set... frustrating. Good fish too.

So pretty blah day, but when we got out there and saw the conditions (mostly water temps) we knew the bite would be tough.

Hitting a local lake tommorrow morning if anyone wants to join me, just throw me a pm.

I'll post the pic tonight when I get home, it's on my dads cam.

Steve, sorry to hear your boats taking so long.  I got your call yesterday but was actually taking care of stuff with the wife and didn't hear it ring.  I'll give you holler tonight to catch up.

New, I'll check my settings.  Hope this report helped.

One last thing, with all the rain, the main lake actually stayed pretty clear.  Visibility by launch and some pockets on the main lake was almost a foot deep.  Otherwise slight stain.

Nice report! Sounds like a tough day indeed.  I was surprised how well I did on saturday. I thought the temp drop would definitely turn the fish off, but it seems it did on most other bodies of water.

Andrew were you guys getting numbers or size on Saturday?  What were you guys throwing?

I know I probably should have threw some lipless and jerkbaits but with the cover I was fishing and the amount of hangups I was encountering with my jigs and plastics I didn't wanna lose over 40 bucks in baits lol.  Maybe if I were fishing another lake.

Glad to hear you guys found em'.  I'll be back out tommorrow morning on a local lake and then Saturday for a few hours pond hopping with a bud.  Hopefully we get on more.

My buddy jeremy and I did fairly well with about 40 bass between the two of us. My average bass was 2lbs with my biggest being the one in my avatar (7+ lbs). his average was 1.5lbs, biggest was a 4.5lber. we were throwing blue/black jigs and laydowns on steep banks. I think he got smaller fish because he was fishing a smaller jig. pretty much cookie cutters cept for the piggys

Beautiful fish, looks like we were on the wrong lake...

Crazy how people can throw almost the same thing on very similar cover and structure on two different lakes in relative close proximity on the same day and come up with two different out comes.  Sounds like a heck of a day to me.  Wish we would of got on em' like that.  Every dog has its day though.  It certainly wasn't ours.

Just gotta rebuild that confidence and get back out.  Thats what tommorrow is all about.  We will see what happens I guess.

Way to go on the big ole monstah!  That's a beautiful fish.  Does that trump your previous pb?  I know it was 7 something if I remember correctly.

barely beats out my previous PB of 7lbs. 4oz. this one was 7lbs. 6oz.

Thanks for the report, dude.

It seems like everytime I am out there, it is choppy as all hell. Its almost not worth it in my yak, as they days I have been out there I would have been blown against the rip rap the dam all day.

No prob.  Not gonna get out much more til' next week so I'll prob just be lurking around.  Wednesday pond hopping around Woodbridge/Dumfries and next weekend hitting a lake down near Charlottesville with my dad.

Tight lines.

Man I was wondering about this lake myself. Instead me and my brother went to Lake Orange last sunday. Only three for the day there. All little guys, maybe 12" or so. My brother got two on his rattle trap and I got mine on the space monkey. I was tossing jigs, spinners, and rattles also but no luck.

I might try curtis lake this year sometime. Next time out though I might hit Hunting Run or Ni Reservoir. Nice pic JCrzy4Bass.

Finally got the pic from last weekend, nothing special. Went two and a half, avg cookie cutter bass most on here have been catching in Nova, aside from the few that have been slaying em' (Andrew and Soccr).

Healthy looking fish though, wish I would of tried throwing cranks, I feel like I would of got em' much better that day. Anyway, back out tommorrow to a spot on the rez and a honey hole pond to see if I can get numbers for once this year. Will let ya'll know.
