Hello, I'll be heading there this spring to visit. Is there any good places for bass near there? I'll be shore fishing so please keep that in mind thank you.

Triple D, I can't believe it has been over 30 hours and no replies to your post.

May I make the following suggestions?:

If you are in the city of Roanoke, go on line to Google maps and try to find local ponds. I would think that office complexes and apartment housing would also have ponds.

If you are in Roanoke County or Salem, get  a copy of the 2011 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and look up the Roanoke area for places to fish from the bank.

I have not been to Roanoke in years, since LSU played Virgnia Tech, and never fished the area so I am no help other than for the above suggestions.

Good luck and I hope someone from the Roanoke area will give you better information.  :)

i would go on google maps and look around the area you'll be visiting for creeks and streams most of which feed smith mountain lake.  you may be close enough to the lake to pay it a visit

Check out the New River, James River, and parts of the Roanoke River it runs thru the middle of Roanoke but there are a few parks that have access. All can be waded for smallmouth bass. The New River is top notch some of the best SM fishing the state. Good luck shoot me a PM once you get here I'll get you a little more info

I would go down to the Roanoke River off the Blue Ridge Parkway at the old Explore Park.  There is another great place to go fishing from the bank at a place called Rutrough Point.  You go down Rt. 116 to Rutrough Rd, and stay on that road until you get the Roanoke River. Its about 6 miles back there.  That is the upper part of Smith Mountain Lake.  Great smallmouth, largemouth, and possible a striper.

par4fishin is correct that is a good place. But dont pass up the in town fishing as well my brother and I once caught over 40 smallmouth in the section of the roanoke river right in front of Roanoke Memorial Hospitol on live minnows. :)

check out the Roanoke Times online, www.roanoke.com and look for Mark Taylor's, Wildlife blog he did a series not too long ago about good fishing destinations.

par4fishin and vapredhunter,

Are the areas that you referenced designated trout waters? I know the section from Salem park along Apperson drive is. I hate to have to buy a trout stamp, especially when I am not interested in fishing for trout. Thanks.

Rex

vapredhunter,

Thanks. I can't send PMs yet. Will try to drive over this weekend and check it out.
