Hello all.  I'm moving to Portland this summer from Virginia and would like to get some information on the fishing out there.  As the name suggests I fish mainly rivers for smallmouth and largemouth here in Virginia.  I'm usually on my kayak also.  First off, is fishing from a kayak in the Columbia or Willamette even feasible?  I'm used to smaller rivers (other than the James) and I know the ones around Portland are much larger.

Secondly, I have heard lots of good things about fishing for other species.  Any information on what else I could learn to fish in the area would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not opposed to getting a motorized boat if necessary but I would prefer to save my money.  Thanks for everything and I hope to see you all very soon.  In fact, Ill be there next week talking to the hospitals in the area about jobs.

Smallie, hook up with North West Kayak Anglers (NWKA) they have a great forum, specializing in kayak fishing. I was up visiting and fished the Tualatin River, This is a made for kayaking river with free launch! I launched my kayak, paddled about 15 feet and an Osprey swooped down and grabbed a Small Mouth out of the water about 20 feet from me. Portland rocks!!!!

The Willamete above the falls is fishable in a Kayak. Its not as wide as it is below the falls or like the Columbia. The current can be pretty strong in that river from what I remember. The smallmouth fishing is insane up there at the right times. I'm jealous

A kayak is very feasible on the Willamette above the falls at Oregon City, especially after the spring runoff. It's possible to drift downriver from launch to takeout, or paddle up and back from a spot like Newberg or Wilsonville. The river abounds with smallmouth bass. Also try the Mollala River below Canby out to the Willamette, or its trib, the Pudding.

30 + days!! where at? i have caught 8 one day my best. Iam getting a new 16' jon boat thurs with a 60/40 jet i need to get a fish in it soon!!!!!!
