Bakersfield fishing

Featured Replies

hi i just moved out to bakersfeild and  i noticed there are a lot of lakes to fish here, probably about 5 just in the city. just wanted to know if there was anyone else from bako here and if you guys had any tips about the local fishing scene, thanks ;D

Welcome aboard...did not know there were lakes out that way.  Drove through many times...but never stayed...lol.

I'm new to this forum but there are several places around Bakersfield. Probably the best lake for Bass is about 30 miles east on hiway 178 Lake Isabella . You can talk to Ed Cordell at Big Ed's Bait And Tackle 760-379-4170. Also Lake Success around Porterville or BuenaVista in Bakersfied and there  is also the Various canals which are accessible. Another good resource is Bob's Bait Bucket in Bakersfield.

    Hope this helps :)

Welcome to the forums!

Man, now you've got me wanting to take a trip up to BF! I love finding new fishing places in Northern Cali, too bad BF is a tad far away from Oakland.

Would Lake Isabella be worth the drive? Or does it not compare to Clear Lake or the Delta?

I have never fished the Delta or Clear Lake but from what I hear you have to go a long way to beat those two fisheries. Lake Isabella is about 10 miles by 3 miles and 9 to 10lb bass are regualrly caught.

usually during a team tournament a 5 fish limit wins if it's in the 25 to 30 lb range.

Maybe I'll have to try that sometime when I'm in the area. Sounds like it's not a bad place to fish!

Thanks.

Lake Success should be a short drive for you. I drove by it last weekend and it looked very nice. Lots of trees in the water and they allow night fishing in the summer months.  8-)

well you could also try lake truxton, which is in the very middle of the city right off of the kern river. Ive never really fished there but according to the fishing reports they do catch bass in there frequently. then theres also hart park lakes, and also the lakes in the riverlakes housing community.

ABA tournament last weekend Lake Success 38.41 lbs . 5 fish including 1 10lb and 1 12 lb.

WELCOME to the BR forums!! Don't forget the San Diego area. We're not all that far from you and we have numerous lakes around here that are reportedly holding the next World Record bass (at least that's what I've heard time and time again:o) Hodges, Lower Otay, San Vicente, El Capitan just to name a few.

Isabella is always worth the trip! the lake has so much different structure to fish, you could spend day's fishing and not cover everything there is to fish.Another plus is the Kern River flows into the lake, and that's another good area to fish.Plenty of rockpiles, fence lines, trees, the old flume that brought water into the lake, and a bunch of submerged humps, and even the old bridge! As for food, there's the Dam Corner Returant, which has killer food, and there used to be a plase call Bo's at the Paradise Cove Lodge that had great steaks, and the best cheese cake in the world.Bomber Long-A's in the chrome finish,black-grape worms, and crawdad colored jigs are all good baits to throw.

River Walk Park has some small bass.

The ponds been there long enough now that there are bigger ones to entice to come out.

We pulled out seven little bass out of the Kern River today.

We were using crickets and nightcrawelrs

None of them were keepers.

Any Ideas how to excite the bigger one to bite?

Yeah...use Bigger baits..i.e. lures, like plastic's ect..what your using is for smaller panfish, like crappie, and bluegills ect.  Check out the bass fishing articals at the top of the home page

Thanks ill look into those articles.

All in all we pulled 10 very small

Small Mouth out of this 1/4 mile stretch in about three hours.

Big momma has to be in there somewhere

Also keep in mind, big bass got that way for a reason...they usually are conditioned to seein lures, and noise's ect will spook them. Throw baits and use patterns that others don't..be Stealthy, try to fish in low light, i.e. real early in the morning, or late afternoon IF the lake/pond is a Shallow one. Also fish where there's cover and flowing water/ current if they exsist.

have you tried DVL (diamond valley lake)? it suppose to be the jewel of southern california.

i've myself haven't been there yet (just started bass fishing), but know a few guys that do go, and pull out some nice stripers out of there.  8-)
