I have never had much of an interest in jigs until recently. I need a little help picking out some good jigs so i can get the hang of it. I would like to pick up a few of each type but im not sure which to buy. Any suggestions?

You are going to get a lot of recommendations for Jigs that cost $5, $6 and $7 apiece. They are great, and will catch fish, but I think you can experiment with jig fishing techniques very well with a kit like this.

When you get addicted to jig fishing, and you will, you can make a better judgment about which of the more expensive jigs to buy.

Could you go into more detail about your fishery? There are to many factors to consider. I see you're in Texas so Brian, Catt, and other fellow Texans could probally help you well but, do you fish deep or shallow? Which lakes? What type cover do you target?

Theres alot of flooded timber in certain areas and alot of rocky areas too, the water clarity is stained. I fish deep and shallow.

i have had great luck with the eakins jig with a paca chunk for a trailer.  

A good jig that will perform well in both timber and rocks is the eakins jig. It's just a round head jig that isn't really specialized for a task, but performs well at most of them. I'd start out with 1/4oz if you're going shallow. 3/8 at the most. For deep water (like 15ft or deeper) go with at least a half ounce.

For the deep applications I'd use blue and black with a matching trailer. For shallow water, I like natural colors. Since you're fishing stained, either naturals (greens or browns) or black/blues should work. Depends on this, that, and the other so you might need to try both.

I prefer action trailers for stained water because I like the added disturbance. I use the rage tail craw, * *, and occasionaly an H&H Cocahoe minnow when I'm swimming the jig. Rattles are at your disposal, if you like them. I don't use them.

All you have left to do is prove fish are there by catching one, then pick up a flipping pole and start working the jig. Flip and pitch visable cover and submerged structure. Once on the bottem, let it sit for about 10-20 seconds before hopping or slow-rolling it back to the boat. This is how I present my jigs most of the time. Half of my fish come on the initial fall, the other half come after collisions with my bait and cover.

Listen to him! I pitch the Eakins 3/8 Flippin Jig with a Zoom Super Chunk. I will never throw another Jig N Pig combo besides this ever again! If I could give you one piece of advice it would be to practice your pitching if you arent very good at it. It will put you at a huge advantage right out of the gate because you will be able to get to places you've never dreamed of and you will be able to fish for those pigs who might not have ever seen a lure! Sure, you could Walk/Troll up to the cover and flip it in there, but you might not be able to get to that spot one day and you can cover more area by pitching so just practice, practice, practice.

Theres nothing like pitching a jig into the middle of a brush pile and seeing a bass explode in the shallow water pinpointing your jig as its climbing over a branch and ripping him out of there!
