Gas Prices Affecting Fishing

Featured Replies

Do you guys think gas prices are affecting your daily trips to the lake? ;)

Right now my boat is down for the season, however it isn't as big a deal for me as it is for most fishermen. I live on the lake and I don't have to worry about gas for a tow vehicle. Before I moved to the lake I had to tow thirty miles. That would make it more of a hardship.

In the spring I'll see where the gas prices are and make an evaluation on where I'll fish on the lake, whether I travel for smallies or stay close to home and fish for LMB and muskies.

I have had days when I would like to have traveled to a fishing spot further down the road but didnt because of the gas prices. Went to the local fishing spot instead. I havent just stayed home because of gas prices yet. Gas here in south entral Okla droped to 2.99 today. Cold front along with 20 to 30mph winds arrived today also.  :'(

I'm new to Bass fishing, but I love just getting out on the lake and I go every weekend I can.  I usually have about 40-50 minute drive (20-30 miles each way), but the gas prices haven't kept me from going out.  I think the more serious boaters will just deal with it and keep doing what they love.  I think the gas prices will only boater/anglers that only do it from time to time and use their boats lightly.  The ones that pretty much only use it about 2-4 times a year from memorial day to labor day type.  I plan on boating until I die, and if gas prices get higher then I guess I'll have to go get some $1 tv dinners at Walmart because I'm going to keep putting gas in truck and boat, and if all else fails.  I guess I'll just have to keep the fish I catch to eat.  Either way I'm going to be on the water.

I'm fortunate that there are 10-12 ramps within a 20mile radius of my place. One is in my neighborhood. But I do find myself towing to the one closest to the area I'd like to fish and using the electric alot more.

Naw it doesn't bother me that much, fishing is expensive anyway. The worst of the high gas prices is the thought of it. When you look around at every thing else

that has gone up since the gas went up, I went in the store the other day and bought a 16oz Coke and that thing was 1.39 + tax. So I'll just keep fishing until

I can't afford it any more and then I will start cutting back.

With winter being here it hasn't become an issue. I cant imagine it will be in spring though. I am part of the problem everything I own is a gas guzzler so I don't really have much room to complain. Hopefully it will work itself out. It was up to 3.80 or so this past summer and it stunk but you gotta trade the good for the bad to have enjoyment.

It did for me...i didn't even get the chance to go to lake erie and saint clair lake i wanted to go so bad to this year.I'm gonna have to plan it next year.I don't see the gas prices dropping anytime soon.

It has for me for sure.  I only fish about 3 lakes now regularly.  Before gas got ridiculous I drove all over the place.

Yes.

Not a good thing either since some of my closer lakes are running low on water do to the drought.

I haven't had the big motor beyond idle speed since spring.  That's not a good thing either.

Yup, the closest lake I can get my boat into is a 22 mile trip over the RI line and into CT. So if I want to fish on a weekday. I drive a total of 36 miles to work, which = $9.30 (truck gets 12 miles to the gallon, avg RI price is 3.10). Then 44 miles to fish for the day= $12.40 (10 when I tow). ouch. Trying to save $$$ for a new truck is tough.

Hell yes they are  >:(. Last week i spent alot of my check on early Christmas shopping and had 15 $ left. not to long ago 10 would put me at almost a half tank and now it puts me right at a quarter i need that other quarter to get back from the darn lake. so i just went to BPS and starred at all the things i couldn't buy.

No.

Too many good places to fish within 50 miles of Richmond, Virginia.

Even more as you go out 100+ miles from the city.

Easy day trips and you don't have to run your boat for 10 miles at 70 MPH to get to a place to fish.

Just look for wood along river banks and creeks in the lakes and let your trolling motor and current do the work.

Now, for the baits and techniques to use.........

Yep and I don't even own a boat.

Never worried about gas before.....now it's getting nuts. Costs me close to 50 bucks to fill up my small tacoma. Before it would only run me around 30. I know some people easily pump in over 100 into there tanks but for me 20 bucks is 20 bucks. Winter times only blessing is that I don't drive much at all. Be lucky to empty out a 1/4 of my tank in two weeks during the winter.

Probably will effect my fishing even more come summer time.

I noticed a lot more fish are taking public transportaion and car-pooling instead of just crusin and suspending everywhere

Yep.. $3.40 here in Calif. I don't own a boat but i have to think about where I'm going.

today i wanted to out stiper fishing in Reo Vista (45 min. drive=$20.00 in gas ) thought about it and Im going 15min from home. and hopping I'll hook into some blue gill :-[ it just sucks and all remember

November is the chepest gas all year next spring we are looking at $4.00 a GAL. mayby $5

I'll have to sell my @$$ to go fishing ;)
