can someone tell me if this is a good purchase? My local wal mart sells just the scale for $19.99. Dont need the other stuff but the if i can get some extras for a few $ more in shipping then so be it

Perhaps, although I've seen BPS put the Rapala scale on for as low as $12.99  before. I might shop around if you don't need the knife and pliers.

Thanks for reminding me.  I need a new set of scales before catching all those lunkers in the spring.

ive never used a scale but i want to start keeping records so i can track my progress. Any suggestions for a cheap/RELIABLE <-- more important scale?

It looks like a Rapala brand scale, and they are good scales to have.  It wouldn't hurt to buy one.  After all, if you get it and don't like it you can always send it back.  Cabelas is excellent with exchanges.

Scales are a good way to estimate the weight.

I use them when fishing tournaments so I know which fish to cull and replace with the larger fish.

You guys found some good purchases.

Go for it!

Merry Christmas.

Are there any scales that you can use and not rip the basses flesh. Call me crazy but I hate poking holes through their mouth. I was looking at Boga Grips but too much $$. I was also looking at the berkley scale at cabelas same boga grip style and on sale also there ia a $10 rebate for $25+ of berkley product. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0011558014820a&type=product&cmCat=Search_Results_NYR&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=berkley&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=berkley&noImage=0

I LOVE my gripper/scale.  This one's a bit more expensive than the one you're looking at, but IMO a very good investment.  I've had mine over a year, and after a bunch of abuse, it's still good as new.

It has been invaluable to me not only for estimating fish weights, but mostly for dealing with crazy smallies with mouths full of Gammy trebles. Also great for getting pickerel/pike off the line without getting bitten or slimed.

The 15lb version is the one I have, and if a CT bass maxes that baby out I'll post the article ;D

The tools look ok, but I am very fussy about scale accuracy.

It's why my pb is only 7 lbs, 10 oz's.

On most digital scales and many not so great spring scales my best would be closer to 9 or more.

I don't know about the accuracy of that scale because I never tried it.

I can only tell you that I went through 5 scales before I discovered the Boga grip.

It is dead on.  Easily the most accurate hand held scale out there.

Pricey?  you bet.  $100 + at the cheapest.

But if you need to know EXACTLY how much that bass weighs it's the sure fire way to go.
