I need Ideas on what kind of fish to get

Featured Replies

Alright I am set up with a 28 gallon tank and I am having a hell of a hard time deciding what kind of fish to get.

I like the idea of having just 1 fish like a 5" fish or something but I do not think a 28 gallon tank is large enough to grow a healthy fish.

So My last option is to go with small fish. I have been thinking of what kind to get but the hardest part is trying to find tank buddies that are ok to put together.

Any good freshwater fish you guys might now of?

Get an Oscar!

Really its up to you. The employees at the pet store should be able to help tell you which fish are ok to place with each other.

General rule Is 1" of fish per gallon.

Ha! I love those fish! We share the same name (except for the fish part)! My dad makes fun of me sometimes because of it.  :P

Does that mean I can fit a 28" fish in my 28 gallon tank? As I said before I do not think my 28 gallon tank would be able to maintain a healthy large fish such as an oscar. I would of an Oscar if I had the room for one though.

I agree that the people at the pet store would be able to help you with the size of your tank and what kind of fish would fit into it and still be heathy.

Bass may be fun to have, but in most states they are illegal, so be careful or go with an oscar because they act a lot like bass

A piranha ( not those stupid red bellys ill put up pics if you want later )  or African chichlids.

A 28 gal tank is TOO SMALL for an Oscar, add to that that Oscars love to dig up the decoration.

sorry, I was thinking vicariously. I live in an apartment and I can't have a tank on the third floor. You apparently need at least a 75 gallon tank.

How cool would it be to own one of these?

I asked about Oscars a while back and I think Matt 5.0 and LBH will have better in put on that for ya. It may be at least a 40gl tank for one Oscar, some day soon I will invest in a nice out fit so I can have two of'em ;)

I now have platies, they are great for beginners and or those who have limitted time for care of the fish, they are very forgiving with water controll and tempatures. They are great colors too. I've had them for two years now, they have live births too, witch is cool as heck to see them little duds swimming and hiding 8-)

I'm surprized your thread hasn't been tore up with feed back, cause when I posted my oscar questioned it was about 3 pages long by the end of the day, I guess they are a bit busy right now tho ::)

Someone posted a fish tank they made out of a computer moniter and I believe it was Matt5.0 that built a tank in his wall???? :-?  cool stuff

So so far I plan on getting like maybe getting some fancy guppies, coreys, tetras, and a snail or 2 to help eat up some of the algea.

They all do well together from what I have read up on.

tetras are not highly aggressive, but do tend to nip at fins. your male guppies may lose their tails or at least part of their tails.

Guppies yea

Coreys and snails-no experience with

Tetras all died-sensitive fish

Platies and guppies-can handle temp change and Chl levels ect fairly well. Like I said a forgiving fish(platies)

when you mess up on levels or temps they can die quick :'(

I usually get a bottom feeder here and there, they die too-I think its a temp problem for me. I heat the house with firewood and it will get cold if we are not home to keep the heat aggoing. I had two heaters but, doesn't help always.

Its fun and satisfying. :)

We went by today and visited some of the gateway hospital patients and they have a 200gl salt tank that is awsum :D

Love to do salt-exotic

there are alot of african ciclids that dont grow real big

severms, convics, dempseys, pike cicclids. convics are pretty agressive.

discus are cool too.

be careful.. i started out with a 20 gallon and before i knew it i had a 90 and a 55 and the 20 was for feeder fish.

hope that gives you some ideas

discus are cool too.

I love those fish. My dad had a few in his 55 gal. tank a while back. They're super sensitive though.

I thought the idea of the Cichlids was a good one. A pink convict or Jack Dempsey are very nice. I had a Dempsey that would jump out the the tank to eat cat food out of my hand. Great fish and they don't get as big as an Oscar.

Don't overlook fish/aquarium clubs in your area. Not only can you learn a great deal they have auctions and you can pick up fish for the fraction of the price of a pet store.

Jack Dempsey...They don't get as big as oscars, but they sure are more aggressive.I made the mistake of putting a jack dempsey with an oscar...guess what, jack dempsey tore that oscar apart. :( I had to get rid of the oscar or jack.I ended up keeping the jack dempsey.

If i had to start all over again The jack would be my choice, specially with a small tank.Oscars grow too big.You need atleast a 55 gallon for a oscar. They grow extremely fast.

you should try and raise a bluegill in it :) get it when its only like 2" long and then raise it up to be a big boy :)

I've done the bluegill setup with a couple of crawfish to tidy up the bottom. It was cool to watch their standoffs.

I've tried about any type and size of fish, and liked African cichlids the best. For freshwater fish they are the most colorful, and hard to kill. They can be pricey though. I had up to about 15-20 cichlids in a 29 gal. aquarium. It's best to push the inch per gallon rule with African cichlids since they are aggressive, this keeps the dominate fish in the tank from being able to single one fish out to pick on. I've also learned to over filter a tank. On a 55 gallon aquarium I'll use two filters rated for up 55 gal. Small changes to water chemistry is a must in a smaller tank, it doesn't take much to screw up your water quality.
