As you know these lures are pricey.  I have used mine a few times, and have noticed a few chips/scratches in the paint job.  Do you think it would be okay to spray the lure with a clear acrylic (model paint) coat for a little extra protective covering?  Or would this change the Buoyancy, action, or reflective shine?  The two color patterns I have are Metal Shad (which is pretty shiny chrome look), and Leviathan Ayu (which is non reflective light yellow).

Yup, they are pricey but that 's what they are for and if that was your worry ( the bait getting all beat up ) you should have clear coated first, now it 's beat up so adding the clear coat won 't make much of a difference. As how the paint will react when being clear coated who knows, it may work or it may change color, make it milky or bubble up ruining it more that it already is.

I 'd say leave it as it is, most of my pricey baits ( Jackall, Megabass, Evergreen, LC, etc ) are all scratched up and full of teeth marks. I think of it as battle injuries.

On expensive baits, I usually do not mess with the look or paint. They work great with scratches and sometimes work even better. I do try paint or markers on the cheaper baits and sometimes it works out.

DON'T use acrylic spray on expensive japanese baits. I had the same idea as you a year or two ago. I had a LC that was getting a little beat up so I decided to try clear acrylic on it. It ate almost all of the paint/finish off of the lure. Maybe someone on here who is experienced with lure making/painting may be able to tell you an alternative that would work but if I were you I would steer clear of the acrylic.

Thanks all.  Good points.  They aren't really that beat up yet...  I was just thinking ahead, and looking to make the paint job last longer.

The extra weight may be tiny, but it can disrupt the action on some of your lures.  If you do clear coat them, use a very light coat.
