What site(s) do you use? Anybody ever used LimeWire?

everybody i know that downloads uses limewire :-/

With any P2P program, you stand the risk of getting viruses.  Look at the file type and size before downloading and make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus protection (I like AVG free).

Limewire is good for downloading individual songs, while Shareaza is good for bulk downloads.  With Shareaza, you can get the corpus of work from a particular artist, organized by album and year, in one go (search applications for artist name).

Remember...check file size. 2,000-7,000 kbs for most songs, up to 13,000 kbs for longer works (Pink Floyd, Rush)

A discography (corpus of work) can be anywhere from 700 Mbs to over 2 gigs.

^viruses can be embedded in music files these days, they have the same size as regular music files. For suspicious files, pause the download and try playing it, if it wont play at all then cancel the download immediately. I had a few trojans coming to my computer that way, fortunately I stopped them on time.

better way is to join, for example, music forums. You may just download the whole thing w/o worrying about viruses or whatnot. But copyright is another issue...

I used Limewire and Imesh until I ruined 3 straight computers because of viruses. I stick with Itunes now, and I never have to worry about poor quality or viruses.

I work at an electronics store, and I recommend Napster to people. What I suggest is just paying the monthly/yearly subscription. Napster is fast, has a huge downloadable library, and is safe. Limewire does get give you some viruses. If you use limewire use ad-aware, and a good virus protection program.

Wow , I see most of the posts discouraging the use of Lime Wire. BTW , he just asked if anyone uses it. As a former full time musicain I never steal anyone elses copyrighted work.    

 I am glad my musical teachers and mentors did not answer my questions in such a condeming way, I might have tuned them out and not listened.

all my friends use limewire and their computers are fine. as long as you have antivirus protection i think you should be okay. For antivirus i use Avast its free and my uncle knows like everything there is about computers since he works on them for a living and recommends Avast over everything else.

When I occasionally use Limewire.  I download the song, then before opening it to play, I scan it with AVG.  No viruses,then it gets played.

I don't mean to be an a*&hole or anything, I've downloaded my fair share, but I've been to forums before that had forbidden topics related to illegal downloads because of some sort of liability issues they could possibly faced with. I don't know if it's a real issue or if it could really have any sort of liability implications but I was just sayin'. I don't mean anything by it...

If the forum is not concerned with that, then I'll say that Limewire probably works the best of whatever I've used. Torrents can work very well also and often have the most search results and the quickest downloads (and you can download whole albums/discographies at a time whereas limewire is almost always one song per file). BUT torrents are a little sketchy. They need a little more computer knowledge and you need to make sure you don't seed anything. If you seed, that's basically the same as allowing others to upload files from you on limewire. Also, people like the MPAA and RIAA can monitor seeders and find you through your ISP. My brother seeded a movie (it seeds automatically once it finished) and he recieved a cease and desist from our ISP as forwarded from the MPAA with threats of fines of up to $150,000 per movie and/or jail. With these warnings comes extra scrutiny from your ISP because they want to make sure you won't get them sued.

A good way to save money... Borrow a cd from a friend then record it onto your computer and give the cd back... Saves money and doesn't cause viruses.

Thats what I've been doing. Someone had mentioned Lime Wire so I thought I'd check it out. And as I suspected, with all the bad reports and the possibility of being fined for using Lime Wire, I figured something that was 'free' was too good to be true. I'll probably just stick with I Tunes.

I would be very leary of using anything like that... But that is just me.

I use limewire from time to time. I have had a few problems with it. Some times it takes me a song or two to get the right one. But other then that it works ok. Most of the time I just bring the ipod over to a friends place and grab there music.
