BYU vs. Washington controversy

Recommended Posts

Several of the ESPN analysts are making a big deal about the 'excessive celebration' flag that was thrown against Wasington at the end of the game. Getting that flag backed them up 15 yds on the extra point which would tie the game. Kick gets blocked, BYU wins by one. Game over.

I don't get these analysts blabbing on and on about them calling an obvious penalty. Then saying they took the game away from the kids, it's a travesty, worst call this year, blah, blah, blah.

The way I see it, BYU could've just as well blocked the PAT from the 3 yd line just like they did at the 18. That was their plan from where ever they kicked it......block it. Washington knew that and should've given the kicker better protection.

I just don't see a good argument here and they're making a huge deal out of it. Just because they moved the ball back 15 yards doesn't mean the kick got any easier to block. Now if they would've gotten the kick up and it went wide right, they might have a little traction with that argument.

I think the point is, it was a TERRIBLE call. If the call hadn't happened, and the PAT blocked, then so be it.  But the fact of the matter is, the poor refereeing played a role in the outcome of the game.  Not cool.

I agree that it could've been overlooked.....but Washington still had to protect the kicker, which didn't happen.

I don't like/dislike either team....just commenting on the analysts making something out of nothing. If VT had let the other team block a PAT that cost us the game, I'd be all over the coaching staff and the players. It was their job to keep protection and the coaching staff's job to remind them of that before the play went off.

Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but these "excessive" celebration calls are getting ridiculous. >:(

I don't see it as a terrible call. Sure the kid was excited and had no intentions of rubbing it in or anything but he threw the ball in the air which is a clear violation of the celebration rule.

I agree with you 5BL. I think the refs were just doing their job and I think BYU just wanted it more

Well a kick from the 18 may have different trajectory than a kick from the 3, potentially making it easier to block.

I don't know about the call. It was technically a violation, but they overlook technical stuff all the time (ie: the "Bush Push" a few years ago)

Whether or not you agree with the call, it's a dumb rule that needs to be removed.  They're taking the emotion out of the sport.

Actually,i think you'd disagree when a team beats another team you favor and they throw that little "mock" celebration in the other teams face.It has something to do with called "respect and common curiosity".

Rather it may have been a little "extreme" to call it....rules are rules.

I grew up in some rough schools where people got shot over these things.

Sorry for those who don't like 'excessive celebration' flag....it's there for a good reason.

Washington should have made that kick regardless from the 3 yard or 18 yard. They screwed up and now they crying about it...boo-hoo.

The ref stated after the game that if the QB had not thrown the ball in the air he would not have thrown the flag. Amendment C under the 'excessive celebration' rule states only 7 words; throwing the ball high in the air, which the QB inadvertently did.

I don't like it, I don't like it at all.

Why don't we let both teams win so nobody gets their feelings hurt?

Only saw brief "highlight". It appeared that he threw the ball back behind him, like over behind his shoulder. Caught brief view on halftime highlights in Texas game.

There have been 2 of these penalties this season that I have seen called.

They are judgement calls at best.

I'll place blame on the coaching staff. Its up to the coaches to cover all possibilities in a game. Six points does not equal 7 without the PAT. 15 yard penalty is big deal in close game.

If I was a coach, those examples would be shown and coached upon.

Worst officiated game I have ever saw in college football was OU vs Oregon State. Pac 10 officials blew that one on the field and in the booth on the replay.

I don't necessarily agree with the call. I'm actually FOR a little celebration, the game is exciting, as it should be. My problem is that all Washington had to do was give the kicker protection whether they got a penalty or not.

I agree. I think the whole excessive celebration call is balony anyways.

I think I heard them say that the flag came from a Pac-10 ref.

Dumb Rule, dumb call, butt......the kicker should have still made the extra point to tie it up.
