Making a Website...

Featured Replies

I was asked to make a website for our fishing club.... I've never done this before, could someone walk me through this? I want it to be a good site and not some cheap site that you can never find.

Coule things to consider first off:

1. Is it going to be dynamic or static content? Basically, that is the feature set you want for your site?

2. How much money/Time do you have to invest in its development, hosting, and maintenance?

For any web site or app I have worked on, first put down the list of features/Functional Requirements you have for your site. What do you want to do? Message boards, eCommerce, Bullitin board, articles? Do you want users to have accounts and log in like here? Anything else you want the site to do? Rank them.

Then you can take #2. Put those together you can start to see if it is even viable. You may need to cut some out. There is a HUGE difference between a static html bases site and a dynamic site, with message boards, e-commerce, member profiles, etc. The technologies used vary immensely, the potential liabity (like Message boards, or ecommerce transactions, data security, etc) you may face. Costs of hosting vary depending on the feature set, as do the need and task of maintenance.

It also depends whether or not you are going to do it from scratch yourself, or use someone elses site. You could always use a group on facebook. Which is totally free. Tons of ideas and directions you could take.

http://www.davesite.com/webstation/web-site-design/ - This is the site that I first used to learn HTML and CSS.  It's more geared towards the beginner.  At the end of each chapter, it has an interactive portion to help you learn the skills you just went over.

http://www.w3schools.com/ This is another great site.  It's more for the beginner to intermediate builder, but is clean and well built.  I also used this site for the more intermediate web building including XHTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, etc.

these links I gave you are assuming your going to be hard coding your site by hand using HTML, CSS, Java, etc.  This takes some time to learn, but the results are great.  You'll get a great site that doesn't look cheap and you can make sure your site get's seen.  I was a webmaster for 5 different websites, ranging from photographers, to small business's, to dirt bike clubs.  It's a lot of fun if you enjoy computer work.  The results can we worth the time you put into it.  Let me know if you have any questions.  GOOD LUCK  ;D

Website building can be very time consuming. I have built multiple website for school. I have an MIS degree. While I can build interactive websites and do some of the cool stuff you see on websites I find it very easy to use a web builder/template tool. I created a website for my club using officelive.com. Also when you sign up using this site you can get the domain name for the first year for like $1.99 and then it is like $15 the next year. If you would like to see what the sites can do go to www.deltonasmallboatclub.com. It is a very simple site, but it gets the job done. It is strictly a static site with information. You don't have as many options as would when you design your own site, but building a site like this can be done in a few hours while building an html site can take weeks to months.

GoDaddy will design, build, and host your site for like 40 bucks a month.  Of course if you want to do it a little cheaper, and get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, check out a program called Nvu.  It's a free download and is pretty user-friendly as far as web editors go.

$40 a month?  For this guy's needs, GoDaddy has a solution for about $5 a month.

What do you mean?

I know they can host for that cheap, I was talking about design, building, and routine site maintenance along with the hosting.

We used homestead.com for our athletic association web site. Nothing fancy, and based on feedback we will continue to make adjustments, improvements, etc... but it has worked for us. Check it out:
