Spro Frog hook set issues???  Anyone else or just me?

Featured Replies

Ok, here goes.....this weekend I broke out the new to me spro frog.  LOVE the action on this frog, however before I put it in the water I noticed that it seemed to not compress very well due to the weight that they have at the back.  So I thought I would tweek the hooks up just a hair like you would on a jig with weed guard to allow a better hook set.  Anyway, 7ft med heavy rod with 20lb test line so very little stretch.  Tossing it into the weeds for about 5 min, during a tourny mind you, and then the magic happend.  5lber slams it and sucks it in well, very well.  Gave it just a seconed like you should, and then set the hook hard.  I felt 3 good pumps from her and then nothin.  Arg!  Anyway I chalked it up to bad luck so back at it in the weeds.  Bam, another one about 3lbs slammed it.  Set the hook, and same thing happend.  I took it off and put on a spook.  Ended up in 3rd place instead of 1st damnit!

Anyone got any suggestion other than ditchin this lure because the action is awsome?

Thanks

Pont

picked a few up last week. have not tried them yet but agree with you in terms of appearence. i would think there would be major hook set problems. looking forward to hearing others opinions...

I have had some hookup issues with this frog as well.  However I know a ton of people who love this frog and say that it has the best hookup ratio on the market. I guy in my club takes a rubber band and puts it near the back of the frog to compress the body and he says it really increases his hookup percentage. I plan on giving that a try. Another problem I have with this frog is that it takes on water every couple casts.

For every person here that says no problem...there are two that have problems.

what id like to know is: of those who are having problems how many are fishing tackle that is too light?!

pont,

7'6 HEAVY for leverage and punch, and zero stretch line and WHACK EM!

i dont adjust the hook at all and have marvelous hookup ratios.

If you dont break 2 toad rods a season, you arent hitting them hard enough! ;)

I fish 14# line on a 7ft MH pole and when I've used it on frogs the only times I've missed em is when I set too fast.

Make sure you reel down, point the pole and then set it HARD.

Definitely fish it on 50lb braid, or 65lb braid. 20lb mono still stretches.

Sense switching to a 7ft 6in rod, switching to braid, and switching to a high speed reel. My hook ups went from about 10% to 99% WHEN the fish actually grabs the bait.

There are times when fish just hit the frog, and you can see it still floating there.

Or when the fish explodes about 7 or 8 inches off the frog for no reason...

That too. I had one miss by  2-3 feet last week. Musta been a 1 eyed fish.

or your frog spooked some bait, and you gave the bass a meal! ive seen that quite a bit w/ the frog.

50lb Superbraid, 7'2" Cumara MH, High Speed Zillion, Spro, Bully Wa, or Swamp Donky, nothing but bass.

Only modification I do is thin out the skirt legs and cut to proportional length (1.5x body) and paint silver hookeye with flat black paint. Although I have noticed the Spro's material is a bit hard from from lure to lure, which may be the culprit.  Once you have your delay down you should hook them more often than not on the roof of the mouth with a straight up hook set not a side sweeping motion. Also, I go straight braid to the lure.  Hope this helps.

Definitely braid. After a few hits, the only problem is trying to get it to float longer on days when the fish want a longer pause.

Missed 3 over the weekend on the spro because it threw the hook where I didn't get it set good and I discovered that the Revo STX and Carrot Stix 6'6" M are great for normal topwater applications but terrible for frogs.   Got a 7'3" L&T that I am gonna pair up with a high speed reel for frogs so as not to loose anymore.

I would second the braid and heavy rod comments . if you are still having a little trouble you can take a good set of pliers and open up the hook bends a little to get them away from the body a little more....this helped me. And if the bait is taking on water use a little dab of clear silicone around all of the openings to seal her up tight or just ring her out ever other cast.
