i got the gold bar, and used it for its purpose, and all the stuff dave is talking about, although it looks like paper in the vial to me.

A gold bar and a pocket knife?  All I've got is two buttons, a vile, and a piece of paper, and I have no idea what they're for.

That piece of paper tells you what to do with the right hand wall panel.

Alright, I've got the bar from the right pannel, so I'm off to look for the knife.  When I find it I don't know whether to cut the string or my wrists. ;D

The best tool I found for getting out of the room was Google. :

the game should end when you get the knife because you can use it to cut through the legs of the plastic chair and get out of the room..... unless the door is locked, i haven't got that far lol :-/

there is way more to it than that. It is actually fairly hard.
