Flu Shot

Its funny you guys put this up here because I was going to post a reminder about getting your shot until I remembered more or less being attacked for it last year.

But Tyrius is right. You WON'T be getting the flu from the vaccine. It is also not a reaction to the vaccine that causes you to become sick. If you get sick right after the flu shot it's because you were already getting sick and you body diverted some energy to make the proper response to the vaccine.

Also, you don't just get the flu shot for you, you get it for those you are around. Just because you don't have any flu symptoms doesn't mean you aren't spreading it. That's one of the biggest reasons they offer them to hospital employees.

And for those that have severe reactions after that's why the person giving you the shot should ask you to stick around. Yes in rare instances some people can have an anaphylactic reaction. That's also why they will have an epinephrine pen available.

Like a few people have said, if you really had the flu you'd get one.

Is there any facts that back this up???

This is the main reason I quit taking a flu shot and if you can back it up with a study or something similar(no offense to you) then I just might consider taking one. But for right now I'm convinced it will harm me more than help.

EDIT: This seems to be the main reason others have stopped taking the flu shot, so other would benefit here to have some facts on why we get sick after the shot, just might convince a few to try it again.

As for the H1N1 this is why I refuse to have one and for my family

FishingBuds,

I may have the papers that had that information on but I'm honestly not sure. I have 5 or 6 5" binders that are completely fully of notes and handouts. My information came from when I assisted with a flu clinic at school. As a PharmD student (future pharmacist) I have had more than a few lectures about vaccines and immunology. I'm fortunate to be at one of the top pharmacy schools in the country so many of my lectures come from some of the top experts in their fields.

My question is how can you get sick? The virus in the vaccine is dead. The flu vaccine is based on the virus, not toxins produced by the virus like a diptheria vaccine. So there really isn't a way to become infected as the necessary part of the virus that would make you sick has stopped working.

That's all I really want to say so this thread doesn't become another attack on the pharmaceutical industry. Hope I helped some of you gain a better understanding of whats going on.

I will get one next week. I am am old enough with enough health issues that it seems silly to not get one. Just my opinion. Get one or not; it's your bidness. 8-)

No, I won't be getting either one.  I honestly cannot remember the last time I was sick.  I will , however, be taking my daily shot of Jack Daniels this winter.  ;D

I was given the flu shot for the past 6 years by the military, I never got the flu but contracted a cold every year without missing one.  I will get the flu shot at the VA this year (both of the shots) as it is free and attending college I have much more exposure to large crowds... not to mention it is my first winter back in Wisconsin and I know its coming...
