Need some advice on my favorite lake...

Featured Replies

The last couple times Ive been out to my favorite lake its flat out

sucked. I usually do well there but since prespawn its been bad. Its

also the same lake I caught 7 VA trophies and a ton of fish that

missed the mark by a few inches last year. Its a deep lake for the

area, I think it goes around 40 at best but the shores are steep so it

can be 26 feet deep 12-16 feet from the bank. There are two main

flats one thats 12 feet and the other is 6. There are also a few decent

points that get up around a whopping 15 feet at best. Jigs and walley

styled cranks worked well up there along with senkos and heddon

torpedoes. Any advice on getting some fish? Thanks ;)

If you're doing any early morning or late evening fishing, I would definitely break out the white buzzbaits.  That is a very productive way to find the fish. Once you've found them, unload some of the other lures in your arsenal. Main thing is to try a variety of lures. Not everything will always work, so therefore by using different things, you'll eventually find a lure that really starts bringing them in. 8-)

Do you have any idea how many people are taking the fish they catch up there.   I would say the ones you were catching last year were some of the restocks they put in after they drained and built the new dam.   I would imagine they put them in with a catch and realease only policy but you gotta remember where that place is and the fools up there will take anything they hook, and alot of those fish you put back are most likely fertilizer now.

Don't forget the idiot-rig it will allways bring in something.

I have been having  the same problem!!! I have an awesome lake I fish but the last 2 times I have been out fishing I couldn't catch but a couple of fish!!! >;)

On the lake I usually catch 100-150 fish each day.

That was pre-spawn but now I'm lost. If you figure them out please let me know!!!

Good Luck to You!!

*@)#(%& rednecks got in there when there was only 30 million gallons in it three years ago and screwed it up >;). Ive never seen anyone keep anything or anyone catch much but Im sure they do. Thats probably why the old lake isnt as good as it used to be. I think the grass is coming back though.

The only thing the town has stocked in that lake are trout.

My grandpa heard they stocked some bass but he could have heard wrong. I know we caught a ton of foot long fish shortly after that rumor. I also heard they put catfish in there.

They may have, but if they did they certainly didn't publicize it.

Who knows. I think it was Donna from Parks & Recs that said it. They may not have publicized it to avoid drawing attention to the need for more fish since so many got lost.

roadwarrior wrote a good thread a while back on techniques to catch fish using senkos and ikas when all else fails.

i always start with lipless cranks to cover water and pick off the active fish.  this also gives me some pretty quick feedback about several key variables.  once i've found my key areas for the day i fish them with a system of going progressively slower and lower into the water column using spinnerbaits and plastics among other things (unless of course the rattlebait is producing and then i stay with that.).  one mistake i have seen a lot of fishermen make is to misjudge the mood of the fish this time of the year.  a lot of guys start off slow and when they don't get bites, they slow down even more assuming the fish are inactive.  in reality, the opposite may be the case and speeding up your retrieves may be just what the dr. ordered.  i've seen many a bad day salvaged by a rattlebait. ;)  hope that helps ya buddy.
