I still admit it would be very hard for me to simply give up what I worked for that easy, I agree with this statement-I always thought eminent domain was "for power lines, roads, schools, hospitals and not for a private developer." ???

Touchy subject for me, my parents home which I grew up in was taken thru eminent domain about 15 years ago. They lived right beside the Appalachian trail and the federal government was buying 500 feet on each side of it. So now instead of having a well kept property, garden and such along the trail they have a run down overgrown property. We also helped people who were lost or needed something while they hiked the trail. Now they have nowhere to stop.

Wow you really lived in the mountains? That's awesome. Must have been great running into different people all the time.

It's sketchy. Eminent domain is supposed to be used for the "public good" but now it has been argued that the interests of the public can be aided by private development that create jobs, pay taxes, bring in tourists, etc...I don't like that it has been allowed to include private interests, it creates too much gray area.

Get this, eminent domain is being implicated in the building of the new Nets stadium in Brooklyn, NY. 

One of my dad's good friends had this pulled on him twice over a span of 3 or 4 year.  He acutally welcomed it and made out like a bandit.

First he was living near what is now the Kansas Speedway.  That was pretty touchy around here and a battle that went on for a few years.  That ended up passing and he moved to where is now a Costco and was forced to move again.

If I was King, every dime I had would be spent toward building new sports facilities. I would put Roman leaders to shame!!

There have been several cases in the St. Louis, Mo. metro area where eminent domain has been used to declare properties "blighted". The measure by which this was determined was how much tax revenue was generated for the local municipality. While I think there are times when eminent domain must be used for the greater good, one of our most fundamental rights is the right to own property. When the government can take that property simply because a new owner will give them a better deal, we have started down a slippery slope.

BTW Bilgerat, I would have the same policy as King.
