Looks like we are facing imminent devastation along the gulf coast. I live close to Mobile bay and about a half hour from the beaches. It is difficult to comprehend what my area is going to look like in the upcoming weeks and the economic damage it will cause in the region. It is tough to explain the feeling I have right now knowing that the area I love so much is soon to face such a disaster.  :'(

   I am going to the state pier in Gulf Shores today to take a look at the beautiful beaches before the brown trout hit the fan. I will go back later this week to see how the area has been affected.  I will post some pics later in the week.

I second the above motion.  Let's start cutting the red-tape for nuclear power-plants, use natural gas to its full extent, build more hydro-electric plants, use wind energy to light our houses, etc etc., but.......

Don't complain when cracking techniques used for Natural gas extraction ruins your watershed, don't complain when that nuclear power plant is in your backyard, don't complain when prices go up due to the fact the one of the most inexpensive sources of energy is phased out for less economically feasible alternative.  Until then I suggest we make it safer to drill and use this unfortunate disaster to learn from.

I hope it not too bad. I have been to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach many times. My grandparents would take me camping at Gulf State park. My grandpa and I once took a crab net to Fort Morgans and netted a bunch of crabs that we later boiled. Fun times. It would be a shame to see oil spill all over those beaches and wildlife area.

While you may be too young to remember, it was very common to dump your used oil from an oil change down the sewer or pour it along fencing to kill weeds back in the day before oil recycling facilities became available.

On topic. I don't understand. You've got hundreds of these rigs drilled a mile deep and now one blows and they don't seem to have a reliable contingency plan on how to cap off the well?

This is true. Anyone can do it. I think some don't even realize that they're doing it. Trolling is all about the intent to provoke people or to disrupt and derail topics.

Yeah this totally sucks. We had been planning a trip down to the gulf coast for vacation. I am pretty much forgetting about that.

It is tough to really gauge the damage this is going to do. What is really scary is they are saying it may not be capped and cleaned (from the water) until after hurricane season starts. All we need is one of those to push this slick way inland.
