I've been giving it serious consideration.........what are they? ;D

Why not an iPad?

Even though my generation is supposed to be big technology gurus, I refuse to buy any of the options. I'll stick with my good printed books. There's just something about the paper on the fingertips.

I think if I ever did lose my love for printed literature I would go for the iPad. Why buy one of the others when you can have access to all the extras Apple offers.

Because they're unnecessary if you already have a netbook, laptop, or smart phone. Also, a Kindle is significantly cheaper.

True Dan, but if going on a plane or short trips I think many would rather take one iPad then a netbook, notebook, and virtual book thingy.

a guy at work uses a Kindle and seems to really like it, I'd prefer something that does a little more

I'd go with the Kindle. I have the kindle app on my Droid X and it's pretty slick. I hate reading anything of great length on a screen though so it doesn't get used very much. All of the book apps I have used usually have the exact same books for the exact same price, so it's really going to come down to features for you.

Thanks for the replies, gents. You're saying some of the same things I've said to myself.

An iPad is NOT in my future. I don't play any kind of games, and when I want to use a computer I prefer a mouse, a real keyboard and a big monitor. I have two laptops, and rarely use one.

If I want to watch movies, I have a very nice, large HD tv at home with a Bose Lifestyle sound system. Why would I want to see a movie on a little screen? With lousy sounding earbuds?

What I want is a portable book. I read a lot. I estimate that in a typical year, I will read 150 books. When we go a vacation, I take one book for each day. I sometimes end up buying more while on vacation because I ran out. One of these devices would solve that problem. And save me quite a nice piece of change. ebooks are cheaper than print versions.

The iPad is cool, I'll admit. But I don't feel like paying a lot more for features I will almost never use.

I'm hoping to hear from somebody who has one or the other. I'm leaning toward the Kindle because it's smaller and lighter.

Both are WiFi capable, and both get online. Not an important point for me.

The Kindle has better screen contrast and more memory, at this point. It's also based on a Droid OS.

The Nook has an actual book store behind it, with more titles available.

What's the battery life on these things (both between charges and long term)?

I've contemplated getting one because I actually want to read more but find going to the library a pain and I don't like to purchase books that I read once and rarely pick up again.

.ghoti. I also love to read. I have several thousand books on Libronics/Logos (bibles and bible study) software that I bought while taking some college courses. It allows for all sorts of cross referencing and study aids at the click of my mouse. It is great stuff. What I've found though is when I'm reading for enjoyment, I'm much happier with a book. Just something satisfying about a real book.

This post is not really relevant, just thinking out loud... ::)

Wife has the Kindle, it does what it's supposed to do. I prefer the iPad personally. I had the chance this past weekend to use my father-in-laws... it's all that and a bag of chips.  8-)

come on!

read with a real, good ol book.

internet on trees man!

This reminds me of typical reel choice thread.

Somebody asks for advice on two reels. Both in the same price range.

He gets 20 replies, and 12 of them say to get a fecking Shimano that costs two to three times the price.
