Anybody work with automotive paints or coatings?

Featured Replies

Here is my question.  I have a carbon steel putter that was treated to prevent rust and finished in a satin black.  I do not know how that was done.

I do know that some of the black has worn off the sole where the putter contacts the ground.  Instead of sending it back to be refinished only to have this happen again, I was wondering if I could do something like...

Remove the finish on the entire sole with Scotchbrite, clean with denatured alcohol, then wipe with acetone.  Allow that to evaporate.

Tint an epoxy or polyurethane black with an automotive pigment, or maybe something like nail polish? or model paint?

Apply one coat by foam brush, sand, clean apply another coat, sand, wet sand, polish, buff.

Think it'll work?

What reel do you use on that "putter," and have you tried braid?

When my dad had to do a touch up to his car, we just used an anti-corrosive primer and then mixed some hobby (model car) paint to match the color and applied by an airbrush. Finally a hobby paint clear coat.

Im not sure if a car body applies to a carbon steel golf club though.  :-/

I don't use braid, but find it loads most  effectively when casting a spherical  plug of about 1.620 ounces.  White has been my best color. :D
