flippin gear ratio

Featured Replies

what is a good gear ratio for flippin?  and also what will the hyper speed zillion be used for, topwater?

some folks like a low gear ratio for flipping the slop so that they have good leverage on the fish, but i go for high speed reels to increase the number of times my bait hits the water during the day.

A high speed reel, a Revo 7:1 reel for example, is good because you can pick up line faster and get the fish out of the cover more quickly.

A high speed reel is great for pitching. True flipping can be done with 20 ft of line and no reel.

For years I flipped and pitched with a 6.3:1.  I tried the 5:1 ratio reels and the 7:1 burners.  I personally like the 7:1 because I can take up slack faster and get the fish out of the cover quickly.  With the technology going into reels these days, the 7:1 reels have plenty of torque to get fish out of cover that they may have buried into.

i agree w/ brian, a i too use a 7:1 and they are plenty powerful to pull fish out of cover.

put it this way, they are powerful enough to break almost any rod you would be using, so using a low ratio for the tourque is really not necessary.
