Zombie Gators?????

Recommended Posts

Anyone see this on Nat Geo? It was about gators in one lake I believe in Florida that were turning into "zombies" they weren't acting normal. I caught about half the show but what I saw was very interesting. Scientist were doing all types of test on the water in the lake, the gators themselves (healthy and sick) and couldn't come up with anything for awhile. In the end they said it was due to an explosion in gizzard shad. I guess there was a big algae blume and this in turn gave the gizzard shad a ton of food and there population increased. The gators started feeding primarily on the shad which contain high levels of thiaminase. These high levels of thiaminase were causing the gators neurons to die which made them appear in this zombie like state. In the end they said it killed thousands of gators. There solution was to get rid of all the gizzard shad. Problem solved.

From what I saw it was very interesting anyone catch it and can add more  maybe I missed something or know were it  took place?

Thousands of gators didn 't die, it was several gators only and it was at one lake only, yes the reason for the deaths was the lack of a more balanced diet, the main food source was shad which has high levels of thiaminase.

Maybe I miss heard them and they said it could have killed thousands. I did say it was on one lake though.
