Not sure how old the computer is,but if you can't get it to run, what makes you think another program will work?

I'm using advast without any problems....matter of fact I like it so much I upgraded it to the paid version. It's really nice.

funny, i had MSE installed and i got a really serious virus that was spread through the network. took me at least a day and a half to fully remove it.

right after that i deleted MSE and got Avast and have not had a single bit of malware installed on my computer since. it blocks EVERYTHING. MSE just alerted me when the malware was already installed.

After you do a full benchmark scan on MSE, it becomes heuristic. Meaning that is aware of every file on your machine. So the moment that any change is made to your file system it catches it. I have literally had no problems with it and recommend it to all my walk-in clients.

I dont like Avast! and AVG Free because they are resource hawgs. Where as MSE is extremely light.

But I think we can all agree that if you want to avoid the viruses...cut back on the pron.

Avast doesn't let changes be made to  your system ;)

I can't attest to his surfing habits, but I have a friend that got multiple viruses (virii?) while using Microsoft Security.  I have never had a single problem with AVG and I have been know to browse questionable websites on occasion.

Am I not mistaken but doesn't it ask you every single time ANYTHING is made to your system? Can get annoying no? MSE is for people who don't really do anything except regular use. Set it and forget it. I don't need some one asking me every time there is a file change. That kind of stuff is, like i said earlier, a resource heavy application, where as MSE is light

Maybe it can't be said enough times.

You get what you pay for!

You will never have a problem with any anti-virus software until you run into a virus that gets into your computer.  I bought into the idea that AVG Free was the program for me, right up until I started up my computer one day and the screen was a bright green.  Getting rid of Ransomware cost me more than Norton does now.

I installed 2011 AVG free a couple of weeks ago then uninstalled within a day.  It slowed my computer down too much.  For the last year or so I've been using STOPZILLA,  but its only for spyware,  malware... pretty much everything except viruses.  I also run ARO registry optimiser.

I'm not exactly a puter wiz or anything so I'm not sure what all the differences are between spyware and viruses etc...  I haven't got any viruses yet.  "knock on wood"

It is important to remember one thing: the absence of an antivirus alert or major perfomance decrease is NOT proof that you don't have a virus. I shutter to think of what a real program might find on the computers of some of you all who think you've "never had a virus" since installing free program x/y/z.

Your a/v might have never said anything about you having a virus but what good is an antivirus program if it doesn't detect anything? It's quite possible you do have a virus but you're free program hasn't detected it... Look up the detection rates provided by product reviews sources like PCMag,etc.. The highest scoring programs are generally NOT the freebies.
