Crappie caught on flies with flyrod.

Featured Replies

I had some fun today at my neighborhood lake. I took a fly rod and rigged it up with a floating fly and then about a foot more leader with a small sinking trout fly.  When I made my cast the sinking fly would sink very slowly and if a bream did not hit the surface fly, I was catching crappie on the sinking fly!  The surface fly would act sort of like a bobber and when the crappie would bite, the surface fly would very slowly start to go under.  First time I had ever caught crappie like this.  I was fishing about 6-10 feet from the bank in about 4-6 feet of water.  Lot of fun.

I agree about the fun factor.  Its fun to cast and pull the fish in with the line.  Try bass sometime its just as fun though the bites are less frequent.

That's awesome.  I'm wanting to break out my fly rod this spring once it warms some and try it out on multi-species.  I'd love to catch some trout, but I would love to catch a bass or crappie on it as well.

When I fish along the Bullrushes in the summer I use a popper that looks like a hopper. I tie a drop line from the hook on the hopper and tie on a streamer or nymph. Works great when the hoppers are active.

Nothing like catching panfish on a flyrod, those that don't use one don't know what they are missing, can catch two to one with you using crickets! :o

Caught my first crappie today using a topwater popper.  Never done that before.  Yes they will hit a topwater fly AND the sinking fly like I caught them on the other day.

Love catching crappie.  I will try a small jig and a single tail grub and a floating fly with a 1/4 sinker and about 4 feet of leader but my favorite is a Mepps inline spinner bait.

sounds like you had a ton of fun. i will have to try that with my fly rod

how did you fly ty rig look?
