Looking for Walleye advice....

Featured Replies

Any walleye fisherman on here?

I have a house on Greers Ferry in Arkansas. There are a fair amount of Walleye in the lake but we are known for the big ones. This lake holds the world record and has had numerous 20lb fish pulled out of here.

I grew up fishing this lake but have never targeted walleye. Right now the lake is flooded but the fish are very active. This is a fairly deep clear lake. The surface temp is 75 right now. How should I target these fish? What depth? What baits?

I bought some crawler harnesses but haven't tried them yet.

Any advice?

I'm fishing the White River this weekend for trout during the day and Bull Shoals for walleye in the evening. I highly recommend throwing jerkbaits in low light and at night. They school on steep, rocky points on the main lake with deep water immediately adjacent to the structure. When you find one, you have found a school, they are never alone! The bite is very aggressive, so be prepared.

I WAS catching a little bit of everything on x raps...blacks, smallies, whites, hybrids, and even a rather agressive bluegill :) However, i haven't tried evening fishing with them.

I have caught some 5lbers by accident on flukes through the years but just don't know them that well.

Let me know how you do on Bull Shoals. I KNOW how you will do on the white. ;)

Most of the guys fish Smithwick Rogues (black & silver with an orange belly). I like LC Pointers (baby bass) and Rapala Husky Jerks (blue & silver with an orange belly).

I got a box full of rogues in that exact color stashed somewhere in the back of the shed. I haven't thrown them since discovering pointers and x raps. But I will dust them off.

I have about 5 weeks of nothing but fishing ahead of me. Luckily, my job allows nearly all of the summer off. Its a tough life :)

BTW...If the white is anything like the red, you should wear them out. I have been doing quite a bit of fishing on the red and its been really good. You ever smallmouth fish on the white?

Bomber Long A's work great here on St. Clair. The night bite is always hot.

No, the water is too cold below the Bull Shoals Dam (53 degrees) to support a good population, but I do catch a few by accident. I have never caught a brown fish of note down there.

My partner will be after a big number, he boated 57 in one day last year. I fish sculpin and am only looking for one bite.   ::)

We do pretty good with 3in grubs tipped with part of a night crawler jigged on the bottom VERY slowly as we drift along.  The small reservoir I fish we do good with cotton candy color.

Well i never really fished for walleye but my buddy accidently caught one on a nightcrawler at codorus while just trolling along. But anyway check out www.walleyefishingsecrets.com and see if you can get anything from there. I never really got into it I just know of it.

I have been fishing for Walleye all Spring....Here in Ontario.

These have been working so I really haven't been trying other lures.

3" Grubs(WHITE or CHARTREUSE) 1/8 oz jig head(WHITE)

only other lure we have caught Walleye on was a perch patterned X-Rap

I have found a steady retrieve along the edge of a weed bed has been key. Actually bouncing the grub off the bottom has not been successful, I have no idea why, maybe because we have had a pretty cool spring

I have fished St. croix in Wisconsin for Walleye and it was a whole different ballgame. Some grubs and leaches was all I needed to load the boat.

It is a little different down here in the south. There are some monster Walleye in the lake but i have never been interested in catching them....until this year. One of the guides I buy my hybrid baits from, uses a bottom walker with a spinner attached to a crawler harness. he does well and has clients come from all over up north.

I called to book a trip with him. One day with the right guide, and i should know enough to figure the rest out. Some of these guides are incredible fisherman with many little tricks of the trade that few people know about.
