Some crappie questions

Featured Replies

I'm not new to fishing, but rather fishing for crappie. Now iv caught these before when trying to fish for Bass and i figure the ponds around here must be stocked with them and although its not spring time, they must be hitting pretty good with the right gear.

Heres the question or questions? I primarily use a baitcaster and i don't plan on getting a new rod soon. So i'm all set there. I need to know what you guys use to fish for these guys. I know that jigs are a big, can i get a few links? Also this brings me to my next question. How the hell do i fish these? Just drop it, and toss it up from the bottom a few times or real it in like a crankbait, nice and steady?

Thanks guys, i posted on a crappie specialty forum so well see wh gets the better responses

You are really better off with a spinning set up. I've found the most important thing when fishing for crappie is finding them. Since they school up in the summer you don't find many hanging out by themselves like bass. Jigs work great, especially when tipped with a berkley crappie nibble. They usually hit them on the fall so I fish them with medium to big sweeps.  But I don't think it really matters how you fish them as long as you get the jig into the crappie and it is moving. Small crankbaits work too but for me jigs always produce better.

But crappie usually aren't stocked in ponds unless they pond is huge. If you know there are crappie in the pond target standing timber and brushpiles, if there are any.

Light tackle and very sensitive rods are needed for crappie.  Sometimes the bite is so subtle you don't even know its happening. Small jig heads work best for me, 1/32, 1/16, with a grub and a crappie nibble.   I found a Rapala ultra lite on sale one day at Wal Mart for $7.00 and put a small cheap Daiwa spinning reel on it.  I also have the Sam Heaton 10' Crappie rod and a Pflueger underspin reel on it.  I LOVE that rod! Super sensitive.

Its also fun catching bass on it.
