Catching a triploid grass carp?

Featured Replies

Make sure it is legal to catch grass carp in your state.  Florida regulations are: "Triploid grass carp are used for aquatic vegetation control and may not be stocked or harvested without a permit."

I fish 2 private lakes here in Florida that have been stocked with triploid grass carp to help control the vegetation.  I realize that these fish are protected and there are fines for harming them or harvesting, but to my knowledge you can still catch them.

Many times as I am cruising around the shallow areas of the lake to a new bass spot I run into these huge fish.  I saw 2 this morning that were 3 feet long, when they spooked they move a ton of water and the fisherman in me would LOVE to fight this fish.

How in the heck can you catch these fish?  I run into them randomly because I assume they were stocked properly per acre of water and they cannot reproduce, so it's not likely I find a pack of them feeding.  Whenever I see them I want so badly to swap my worm to wacky and snag the beast, but I know it's not allowed.  Any advice on hooking up on one of these pups?

Few months ago there was a big discussion about catching these. I'll see if I can ind a link. But, from what I remember some said, use a ball of bread/grass with a splitshot up the line.

i fish a little pond that has been stocked with 20 or so of them.  In early spring there they come up and just feed like crazy on anything thats floating around.  I just threw out peices of bread and then threw out a piece of bagel with my hook on it (it floats better) and one took it.  it weighed 14 lbs and fought pretty hard.

good luck with it.  i think they can be fun

I have had pretty good success, when they are in the area, with a good sized chunk of bread wrapped around a 2/0 sized hook.  They like to eat off of the surface, you have to get a little lucky and hope your bread stays afloat long enough to get noticed.  But the big ones will come along sooner or later.    Good luck
