hooks

Featured Replies

im new to the sport of fishing. i was wondering what is the best brand to use for worm hooks? and whats the best size?

I like owners and gamakatsu. Buy a variety of 2/0 3/0 4/0 and 5/0 mostly 4/0 is all you need for a majority of plastics.

There are 3 characteristics that any hook I buy must have.

1. It must be extremely sharp.

2. It must not be easily bendable.

3. It must be cheaper than the majority of the hooks being sold.

If the hook meets all of those recommendations then I do not care if it was made by owner, gamakatsu, or Chuck's hook shack.

I tend to stick with 3/0 wide gap hooks for most of my plastics, but I keep a small quantity of 2/0, 4/0, and 5/0 hooks (usually a pack or two or each) for different plastics that may require larger hooks (like frogs and Rage Tail Shad). I also keep a small handful of "standard" offset worm hooks or O'Shaughnessy hooks for skinnier/lighter plastics like Zoom U-tails or Trick Worms.

As for brands, I buy whatever I can get a good deal on. I have Owner, Mustad, Gamakatsu, and BPS brand hooks in my box and have no problem using any of them. I tend to use more BPS hooks due to the price and proximity to the store (15 miles). I can get a pack of 20 BPS XPS Wide Superlock 3/0 hooks for about $5.

I prefer Gamakatsu or Owner hooks... usually I use as big of a hook as i can get away with without sacrificing any of the action of the worm

If you are looking for some great hooks that are priced lower than anyone else look at http://www.hookerztackle.com/. This is where I buy all my worm hooks.

x2 - I just placed another order with them.  great hooks, great prices & friendly service. And they ship fast. ;)

I'd have to say gammies are sharper than owner, but owner may have a better cutting point and they are stronger which really matters when you're flipping and pitching heavy cover. I mostly use ewg 4/0 the most but keep a stock of 2/0 3/0 5/0 mostly gammies but from now on  i'm buying owner can't go wrong with any. I only bought a lot of gamaKatsu ( I hate when people say gatsu ) because they were available. I feel strength is key as i only fish braid and once i awhile co-polymer, if you use a superline with no stretch you hook sets will be solid and as long as the hook point is not flat it's going in. As well with high pound braid 50lb Ex. you can actually straighten out some hooks vmc david fritts comes to mind.

Cliff notes: Buy a variety of hooks in ewg 2/0 3/0 a lot of 4/0 and 5/0

Make sure they are strong ( don't skimp on hooks ) Owner and gammakatsu are a great choice as well and vmc extra heavy hooks my flipping hook of choice.

When using small to medium sized worms, lizards, or creature baits I like Mustad Straight Shank Denny Brauer Flipping Hook; when an offset hook is needed I like Strike Kings Saber Points.
