Trout fishing with bass gear help?

Featured Replies

I have fairly heavy spinning and baitcasting rods for bass fishing. Also I have the standard bass tackle gear.  My friends keep inviting me to fish for trout in the local creeks, and i've never been.

would I need to string light line on my spinning reel and buy some smaller lures (rooster tails, etc) or are there things in my bass tackle that would work?

I'm clueless.

Put the lightest line you can get away with on the lightest spinning rod and reel combo you have. Monofilament is OK, but Fluorocarbon is better (it is less visible). For lures, I like to use Panther Martin Spiners in the 1/32 oz size. Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are my favorite colors. You can also use live crickets, grasshoppers, or worms on a #8 or #10 hook. Make sure you are aware of the regulations for the streams you are fishing, on most wild streams only single hook artificial lures are allowed. Good luck.

I am new to bass but have been fishing trout for a while. I suggest going out and getting an ultra-light or light setup. Panther Martins and Rooster Tails are both good lures. Also small spoons, night crawlers and live minnows all work well. My favorite is a 3" Berkly Trout Worm in bubble-gum with a #10 hook. Good luck!

Line visibility is a BIG issue with trout. If the water you

fish generally produces stockers or just smaller fish, ultra light

equipment and #4 line is my suggestion.
