I just read this and i wouldnt suggest lipping a catfish i have done it several times and it doesnt bother me any more but if you have low pain tollerence it pts alot of pressure on your thumb

After getting stuck last time, I just got me one of these: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_014820&id=0018687015490a works great and I can have the kids use it without getting hooked themselves (see profile pic).

Works on just about any sizable breed. You can pull them out of the water, grab 'em, get the hook out and put them back without a net, or getting your hands on wiping off any of that slime off their bodies.
