Musky reel

Featured Replies

im looking for a good musky reel for around 60 dollars, any suggestions

I think the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Classic C3 Casting Reel (in either 5500 pr 6500) is a very solid musky reel.  They are a little more than you wanted to spend, but if you look around (i.e., eBay, retail store sales, etc.), you might get one in your range.

I agree with Lucky Craft, but would say that in your budget line, look for the Ambassadeur 5600 BCX.  You should be able to find them new somewhere around your price mark.

I watched the " In Fisherman " TV show yesterday.  Their staff expert used the same outfit for muskie and  Redfish, a supreme 8240 spinning reel my guess a mh 10/20 rod, the guides in each area used spinning as well but I didn't notice the brand, the redfish were very big.

That had to be Matt Straw, he seems to only use a coffee grinder.  Cant imagine anyone else who ever would try that.

Go with the 6500 Ambassadeur. Outstanding reel. It'll do anything you need in freshwater. May cost a tad over the $60. mark though? Not sure....it's been awhile since I bought mine. Like about 25 years! There reels are plenty tough enough to hand down to your grand kids too!  :)

Stay away from the new abu reels, they will not hold up to muskie fishing at all....trust me, i went through 3 in one season, not one lasting over 2 months.

I have had good luck with the Shimano Corvalus and Cardiff in the 400 size.

For about $60 the Shimano Corvalus 400 would probably be your best option. The Abu C3 6500 would be a good choice, but it is a bit more expensive.

I have an Ambassadeur 5500 and a 6500. I've had them for years and they still work fine. You can find deals on eBay all the time. The only fault with the old Ambassadeurs is the drag system. They are not the quality that the newer reels have.
