Peacock Bass

Featured Replies

Early December 09 I took some time off & visited with my sister in Miami FL and the of course the Ranger tagged along and this is one of the bass I managed to get into. This one is 18 1/2" and the next day I managed one that was 22". This is one fine fighting fish and I hope there are some left after the winter kill. :'(

Gotta love catching the Peacocks down here.  Yes there are some left.  They breed rapidly and grow rapidly to maturity.  They'll be back before you know it.

ive seen a couple empty beds and tons of baby peas along the shore of a local lake. they will be back  ;).

Nice fish. I took some of my staff down to the canals last week. They had a blast. There were three fish caught at about 4lbs. Had to find the warm water. I did see a LM on the bed in the canal that was huge. She was laying eggs and not interested in anything thrown at her.

I have got to get to Florida.  They are one beautiful fish.  What are the best regions in Florida to find Peacocks?

You're only going to find them in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. I don't believe they live on the western coast of Florida at all. I'm not sure how the population is up in the Palm Beaches, they probably recovered. The cold weather we had here a few months back really hammered them anywhere north of mid-Broward county.

You can have a ridiculously good day with a bunch of live shiners.  Thats the single best method to catch them.  Small sharp hooks, rigged through the nose.  You can go through several dozen fish quickly if you get into a school.  They're super aggressive when they see baitfish.  Plastics work rarely.  Small minnow shaped cranks, x-raps, etc etc are also productive.  If you hook into a large one, you better have some decent gear.  Pound for pound they're the best fighting fish swimming.

there are  a few places in lee county you can catch em.
