chug bug

Featured Replies

i just picked up one of these storm chug bugs. i read that they we a great lure so i got one. my only question is how do you fish them. i know you cast it a twitch it around and let it sit, but for how long do you let it sit. so basically what i am asking is do you fish it fast or slow?

Sometimes they want a lure like that fast, sometimes slow....sometimes 1 pop before a pause, sometimes 2, 3 or 4+....sometimes they want a splashing sound, sometimes a gulping sound.

My point is that you want to figure out what the fish want.  Try it all different ways and when you get a bite stick with it.

As a general rule of thumb for me, I start out fishing it faster in warm water and slow in cool water...then adjust from there.

There are no set rules. Play with it one time chug it a couple of times & let it sit for a couple of seconds. Then move again maybe move it for 3 or 4 chugs & let it sit longer. Keep changing it up until you get a fish to blow up on it then keep what you were doing when he blew up on your bait.

ok thanks guys. one more question though. is setting the hook on this lure like it is when setting the hook on a top water frog? do you have to wait for a couple or seconds, or do you set it as soon as the fish attacks?

Thanks.

When ya feel weight on the line set it. So give it a second or so.

Don't be too quick on the trigger.

I fish them slow. i usually cast it out, let it sit for about 45 seconds, twitch it, let it sit for about 30 more seconds, then begin popping it with around a 10 or 15 second pause between every two pops. As to the hook set, I lower the rod, reel up the slack, and use a sweep hookset when i feel the fish

It has trebles,so no,it is not like setting with a frog.

Like any popper,or topwater hardbait for that matter, you usually have to wait about a full second then sweep sideways just like a crankbait. But it's better to be really attentive to your line and watch for it to go tight, or wait til you feel the fish. Many times they will hit it running and tighten the line right away.If they knock slack it in you better reel like a maniac.

I was just using it this morning and missed two fish one which looked around 6 lbs. They both hit me coming staight on and I couldn't hook up in time >:P Had another one nail it while I turned around to see what the splashing sounds were behind me,needless to say I missed him too. They play us like we play them sometimes :-/

Working the bait: Typically I walk the dog tight and fast with it and throw in pauses. This bait works well for that.If I am fishing slow with long pauses like others described I normally use a different lure
