Does Jimmy Houston know what he is talking about?

Featured Replies

I just happen to know Jimmy. He has eought going on with personal apperance and his boat bussiness

to keep him and 2 more just like him busy for a long time. He know his stuff and is willing to share if you will just listen.

He is like several other Bill Dance, Hank Parker  to name just a couple who has paid their dues.

Jimmy, I would be honored to fish with you---ANY LAKE-- ANY TIME!!! You have been a great ambassador for the sport. I am about your age and I never had an edge to lose so now what??? Maybe you don't have the passion you once had, maybe you do, most of us a little longer in the tooth enjoy slowing down a bit and soaking up life instead of tackling it. I am an airline pilot and have lost some of my passion (hopefully not my edge) for flying and would rather enjoy family and friends on a beautiful lake. I understand tournaments are like work, someone tells you how, when to start, when to quit, where to go, and makes you pay to do it. Sounds like work to me.

Most of us couldn't carry bait next to you. -- THANKS FOR THE YEARS!!

PS- I will be waiting for the call. 8-)

Now that the final stats and money winnings were released by BASS I noticed that Jimmy Houston finished dead last in earnings for this year. He took home a whopping ZERO DOLLARS. He did not earn a single cent from the BASS Elite Series.

Does that make you guys less inclined to listen to what he says on his show?

Anybody can talk about fishing and edit a day on the water to make yourself look good, but tournaments are where you put your money where your mouth is. If you really know what your talking about, then prove it. He didn't prove anything to me this year. I've never really watched him regularly, but have caught his shows occasionally. But now I see no reason to listen to him because when he put his money where his mouth is he lost $55,000 in entry fees.

I didnt read anyones posts and reactions to this topic starter but I just needed to get in here and put up my unneeded opinion:

Holy S**T are you kidding me? He didnt earn his money and you wont listen to him? The only thing proven is that he will make more money fishing than you will ever see in your lifetime! You think that is handed to him and that he didnt earn his way for the past 20 years. That guy is one of the pioneers for the sport you get to watch on tv Saturday morning. Of all the dumb crap that gets posted on these forums yours has to be the most disrespectful and it would be nice to see him spit in your face for being a whiney little brat.

Ouch, however, good flogging though Hale.

Does anyone know why Parker got out of competitive fishing? I mean, he's been gone alomost 10 years or so and he won a few classic's, he is relatively young.

I think he is a good bass fisherman. He's won his share of cash over his career. As was mentioned earlier,he is 62 years old.He does about as well as a 62 year old Roger Clemens might do in the majors or a 62 year old Brett Favre(getting pretty close actually) might do in the NFL.I think you'd still have to say they are/were two pretty fair pros.

He was talking about in once on a show and I dont remember exactly what he said, but it had something to do with his family and the rigors of the tour.

Yeah, I went a little overboard on the last post...for some reason it just hit a button! And now we got someone calling Roger Clemens a 'fair' pro  ;D  ;D (The old man averaged 9 KO's per game and a 2.3 something era this year...better than fair huh?)

Yeah,I know he is better than "fair".It's called a figure of speech.Hyperbole used to,in an ironic way, show how "great" he is.Sorry that one went over your head.I'll try to keep it a bit more straight forward from now on.

He is also in the fishing hall of fame.  If that is what it is called.  I can't remember.

I believe that Mr. Houston has come to the point were he doesn't have to prove himself anymore.

Plenty of people say that a man who has gotten older can still compete on tour and that is partly true, but there does seem to be a trend of older anglers falling short and younger ones coming on top.  (That is not always the case of course)

I am neither a Houston fan nor a detractor. However, I think you're being too harsh on him. He's certainly not a top competitive angler, but he's 62 and has seen better days. He has won some tournaments, had 68 top-20 finishes and qualified for 15 Classics.

And despite the fact that he might have finished last, just being qualified for the Elite series puts him in a very tiny fraternity of bass anglers.

He's been around the block quite a few times and his current competitive woes should not detract from his knowledge of fishing or his ability to teach others.

I so agree with Marty.

I guess if he is 62 we are not about the same age but I still enjoy him and can't wait until he calls me for that fishing trip. I can hear the jepordy music playing in my head whilst I wait. 8-)

Jimmy Houston has forgotten more about bass fishing than you guys know.

He is a very religious person and dropped out of the B.A.S.S. tournaments when they were sponsored by a beer company.

I am glad he is fishing them again and could care less how he finishes.

You are not going to find a better person in bass fishing than Jimmy Houston.

And if ESPN decides to bring back Bassmaster University and Jimmy is a speaker, I strongly suggest you go hear him as he is extremely entertaining, funny and informative.

Hey, if the national news programs can bring back old, retired military officers to discuss the war, I see no reason whey Jimmy can't discuss bass fishing and share his knowledge.

So if you don't want to listen to Jimmy, then forget Uncle Homer Circle, too.
