bass jumpping in boats

Featured Replies

sorry if this has been talked about before....i was fishing a club tourny that a guy had a fish jump in the boat..we held a meeting and decided a fish that jumps in the boat shouldnt count..at that time i never had that happen to me..but recently i had a bass jump in the boat while pre fishing it was around 16 inches..the wind got up and blew the boat against the weeds, there i guess i trapped the fish between the boat and grass ,and the fished jumpped in.. has anyone experienced this before, and do you think it should be a legal fish if your lucky enough to have this happen....thanks for your input

had it happen with bream and crappie but not bass

I got the story of all stories about bass jumping into the boat.  It happened last year in early Feb on Choke Canyon.

Me and my dad were fishing the river portion of the lake, just above the 99 bridge!  We were fishing a section of rocky shorline, creeks, and coves just past the first bend in the river channel past the bridge.  We just happened to be there during one of those "Magical" moments and found a thick concentration of bedded/spawning fish!

This area has thick patches of hyicen covering the shorline, and the fish seemed to be right on the edges of the hyicen!  We were quietly moving along parallel to the shoreline and a few feet off the hyicen line!  We were sticking fish left and right, lots of females in the 4 lb range and full of eggs!

Now, the water is very murkey in this section of the lake, and as we quietly moved along, the bass that we didnt catch would spook as the trolling motor came over the top of them.  We would spook a 4-5 lb fish every couple of minutes!

Now that I set the stage:   I was intently working a bait when I heard a fish flopping around on the deck next to me.   I looked down and saw a solid 5 lb fish!  I said, "Nice Fish" to my dad!  He replied, " I thought you caught it?"  I told him that I hadnt and we soon realized that it must have jumped in!  We thought that it was very cool.

Now, this is were the story gets wilder!  We soon forgot about the fish and got back to fishing.  I was working the trolling motor and flipping, when all of a sudden, another 5 lber launched itself from the front of the boat and speared me right in the growing region.  Now, I will tell you that a 5 lb fish realy hurts when it launches into the "family Jewels!"  I instantly dropped to the ground both in pain and laughing, my dad was rolling at the other end of the boat!

We could not believe that we had just got 10 lbs of fish without putting a hook in either!  We said, "Nobody will ever believe this!"  I got a great pic of the bass that hit me, but it is in my old phone that is broken now!

It is crazy what happens when you fish enough!

Pretty cool story!

Never happened to me, and I'd call it not a legal fish.  Good fishing story tho.

Good stories there but definitely should not count. Most clubs have a provision in their rules along the lines of "legally caught on rod and reel" or something to that effect. If not, then you could put out a trawl seine behind the boat like a commercial fisherman LOL

BTW, when I had the 2 bass jump in my boat I WAS NOT FISHING A TOUNRY!  I was only fishing for recreation and no money was on the line!  Under NO circumstances would I ever add fish to my limmit, during a tourny, that I did not hook legally!

that bass was after the powerworm I guess ;D

A coule of years ago I was pre-fishing for a club tournament. I was on a pretty solid spinnerbait pattern, slow rolling it down the sides of bare laydowns. I was catching a mixture of sm and lm.

I finished up a retrieve and swung the spnnerbait out of the water and to my hand for another pitch, I was already looking for shot placement when I hear a THUD. I look back into the bottom of my aluminum boat to see a smallmouth about 15 inches long flopping around.

Although I didn't actually see the fish clear water because I was looking for my next target, I can certainly tell you I did not have it hooked. There is no other explanantion other than the fish had to be following and had come after the bait when I swung it out of the water. Unluckily for him, he jumped into my boat :D.
