Spinner Baits

Featured Replies

Is there some sort of secret trick to using spinner baits i just havn't heard yet? Because no matter what i can not catch ANYTHING on them. I went out and bought a Boo Yah HD spinner bait used it for a good 45 mins without a single bite. Now i fish from a shore and from what I've caught before the bigger bass are a little ways out from teh shore so should i cast out towards the middle? Or closer to the bank? And should i let it sink any or what? Any tips or tricks with spinner baits would be great! ;) thankss.

well to me, its all about the dept and you speed, i fish from shore too, what i do is let the spinner sink down for a good second maybe 2-3 seconds or so then slowly reel it back. If nothing, then try a little faster. If nothing again, I try a different dept with the same speed motion. i found this to be very effective at the places where i fish at

Different retrieves and different depths are key with spinnerbaits. Also learn the best uses for the different blade combinations. I have luck at all depths

Spinnerbait fishing is a science within itself.

Blade types and colors, skirts and their colors, weights, colors of the head, length of their blade shafts, techniques, water clarity, time of the year, bodies of water, water depth, line test, rod specs, reel ratios, trailer hooks, etc.

So to answer your query is not easy.

May I suggest reading about spinnerbaits?

Or purchase Kevin VanDam's Proven Spinnerbait Techniques and Gerald Swindle's Teaching Success with Spinnerbaits, as they are outstanding video/DVD productions.

I would suggest Hank Parker's Ultimate Guide to Spinnerbaits but it is produced in a time-wasting production format with a lot of unnecessary filler although Parker does give some excellent advice and tips on spinnerbait fishing.

An example of spinnerbait fishing, this weekend I fished the Potomac River. All they wanted was white baits such as frogs, spinnerbaits and flukes.

We fished the grass lines and I caught eight on a white War Eagle ½ ounce spinnerbait.  They would not look at any other color or color combination.

If I would go out tomorrow they would probably shun a white spinnerbait and hit another color.

Also, Jimmy Houston and I believe Hank Parker like a short wire holding the blades. For other pros the length of the blade wire means nothing.

So please read and watch productions about spinnerbaits.

My bass don't especially like spinnerbaits unless it's windy, then they will jump all over them.

try banging them against underwater branches and cover. if swimming them in a straight line is not working, try bringing them up high and letting them flutter down a few feet and repeating. ive also had luck swimming them just under the surface where the vibrations from the blades are making small waves.

sometimes they just dont want a spinnerbait.

fish it to where you cant see it. idk where i heard this from, but they call this the "twilight zone". has made me more confident with spinners while doing this.

x2 on the KVD spinnerbait video.

As already mentioned. Try them on a real windy day. Just yesterday I introduced another member here to spinnerbait fishing on a small lake. It was super windy and we only caught a few fish, but one of those fish was over 6 lbs.

I'm sure he'll be hooked from now on.

Keep it simple as well. Most of my spinnerbait fishing is done with simple white spinnerbaits with willow leaf blades

Overcast and windy don't leave home without a spinnerbait- if it is blue bird clear water chances are you are better off using something completely different- these are general applications- there is always "that guy" that defies all odds, for us mere mortals put the odds in your favor-
