ab-DUCK-ted

We got out this morning about 2am.  The bite was extremely slow, 1 fish in the boat, was caught on first cast of the night and 1.5 hrs have now passed without so much as a swipe at a topwater.

As we moved into an area that has been very productive at night, a very cool chain of events happened.  First, reeling in the j-bug, not a hit in 1.5 hrs and then right at the boat, a monster swung at it, and almost sent Eric and I in the water out of pure surprise.  We were like "Whooooa".  2 casts later, another miss.  I leave the bug right where it is and follow with a trick stick.

WHAM!! BUT IT'S ON THE BUG!!   NOT THE ROD IN MY HAND!!!

So after that cool catch, I release her as Eric is trying to make something out in the dark.  He says "what the hell is that?"  I release her and look and say, "Ducks.  4 babies and a momma"  No sooner were the words out when WHOOOSH

3 babies and a momma!!

We actually saw a bass (no pike here) take a duck off the surface!!!!!  SO COOL!!

I've seen this before but it was a pike (original intro for In-Fisherman tv show)

So, from a total "ho-hum" night, in 5 minutes, we had a trip we will both remember forever.

Gotta love fishing!!

This was the one from the j-bug

Thats pretty wild Russ, I've not witnessed this yet, but have heard the tales before.

Man, we were blown away.  We had to look at each other for like 5 seconds, almost in disbelief, to see if we had both seen that.

Yea,...me, Dirk,4-bizz, capt cali, matt5.0 and many, many more dark side stalkers, lol!  You might want to whisper those words to the fishes!

and of course, the ducks :)

I accidently hooked a duck at night a few years back.  I don't know who was scared more, the duck or me.  I know I had hooked him, and he started squawking and flapping and flying off.  That scared me.  But then my line started stripping off my reel.  That got me excited.  At first I thought I had a nice bass...but realized that it was the duck pulling the line off.  I didn't know what to do, so in panic I tried to bite the line.  I found out that biting line dosn't work very well when it's screaming off the reel :-/  Some how or the other my line tightened up and broke (right at the bait).  I was using a torpedo, so, I guess you could say I torpedoed a duck :-?

I hate being hit right at the boat at night when its totally still and quiet.....

.....and I bet that little duck does too.

When I was younger, I was bank fishing one day and ran across a Killdeer nest. The little ones scattered and one took to the water. I did not know they could swim, but this little booger was scootin across the water. Low and Behold, he made it about 5 feet from the bank when a bass came and sucked him down.

I was in shock, first that killdeer could swim, secondly, that a bass made a meal out of him!
