WHY???

Hey Fellas; My fishing partned is a real huge fan of using a spilt shot when T rigging plastics. He either crimps it right on the eye of the hook, or up to 6 inches in front of the bait, he adjusts it as needed, He does this with great success. He also likes throwing smaller jig heads and trailers.

I asked him, when he is using the shot right onto the eye of the hook, why not just throw a small jig, what's the difference? He said the drop feels different.

So we hooked up, he using his split shot over the eye and I put on a 1/8 ounce round jig head, we had the same trailer on them. His went straight down to the bottom, slowly and mine (jig) wiggled ,almost fluttered down at a slightly slower drop. When he jigged his with the rod, his definitely had a different drop than mine, and on some days he outfishes me with this difference

Is the difference in the drop due to the angle of the hook ve jig hook eye? Basically they are both round lead, with a hook, but the split shot drops differently. The only difference is the angle of the hook vs jig eye? Is that what is causing this?

Muddy, is he using a Shimano reel?  ;D

No, he is a Flooger Mook, through and thorugh! ;D

All I can think of is that the bullet weight is more streamlined than a shaky head. :-/

No, He's using regular old fashioned split shot . From BB up to 1/8 ounce, just ordinary shot, no bullet or conical shaped at all.

Muddy, the angle of the hook seems to be the most logical answer. The only differing factors were a split shot and a hook. Assuming the split shot and the jig head were made of the same material, the difference must be in the hook.

I am not a professional or an expert, just my thoughts.

Thanks

the  angle on the jig provides different resistance on the fall to the trailer you guys are using. not sure what you had on but most jig trailer/creature baits have so many things going on that the different angle probably makes a big difference.

Were you both using the same line?

Identical, same line.rod.reel brush bug

My initial guess (like others) is that the eye position is the majority of it.

But, first! Is that jighead T-rigged too? Is the hook the same length (and wire weight) as the other Mook's hook? (Sounding sorta Dr Suess here)

Both 3/0 EWG, the loose hook is a bit wider, but seems to be the same mil rating as the jig hook

Split shot rigs work well, and I'll bust one out every now and again.  However, crimping the sinker on the eye of your hook instead of pegging a sinker is beyond me.  The first thing that came to mind was that he is crushing his knot.   I will say that the jighead is underrated, and a Table Rock Tackle rock walker jighead rigged with a sweet beaver or beaver bug is a go-to of mine.

Not a lot you can say I suppose. Like you, I find certain soft baits rigged on a jighead are deadly (besides your normal shakey worms).....particularly beavers and grubs. For these baits, a shakey head isn't large enough. I have fallen in love with Chompers Rock Walker jig. It is a great design; boasting a round head with a flat spot making it stand up, and incorporates a much preferred horizontal line tie. The finish is excellent, and instead of a stiff fiber weedguard, you get a unique dual wire guard that is vinyl coated. The weedguard doesn't look unnatural like a fiber bushel, and I feel it actually adds 'whiskars' to your bait.  Love'em.....

Look t the Anti RW thread please, thats exactly what I have been doing. I really love the Evolution 2 heads, but the post to secure the plastic trailers is a bit thick and tears them to shreds, I wish they would make it thinner!
