February Tournament

I'm going to be very cold Feb 9th!!!

Well I just got back from from our local club meeting and we got our tourney dates. I thought we might have one in late Feb but not in early Feb! We have a power plant lake near by and one end is heated pretty well. Apparently they usually spawn in Feb or early march on that end. That's great and all but here in IL come Feb it's usually VERY COLD! We've had our very warm days this winter but you should see the pics I've seen of them out there. I guess I need some overalls, a face mask, and a decent pair or two of fishing gloves by then. I just hope it's not 15 degrees with snow and 50-60 degree water.  My fishing buddy fishes in a College club and he has to be out there Jan 30! I'll probably go check out that tourney and get the low down on what and where is producing. I hear all the time that many people win tourneys there on Red rattle traps and I have one and I could pick a Red Eye in red as well. I've also thought about picking up a Tru Tungsten 4 inch in red craw but I always say to myself what fish is red? I mean seriously if they are after a red rattle trap and that doesn't' mimic any fish really, it's just more of a trigger color. Then what could will a hyper realistic swim bait in red do for me that a Red eye won't at a quater of the price? The only thing that I can come up with is that the swimming action probably acts as good as a trigger as the red does. Any thoughts?

It's no secret that red is the color down here(At least it is on Rayburn). All the talk is that it matches the color of the crawfish in this area. Our craws on rayburn are a dark reddish color during the full moon and a greenish red on the new moon(At least that's what I hear).

Again this is dock talk so I am going to quit here other than to say that lots of big tournaments are won this time of year fishing the rayburn red, orange, and/or several other local reddish colors that always produce in 4-8 ft of water. Water temps can be in the high 40s and low to mid 50s and you cannot crank it fast enough to keep it away from them. At times they will almost rip the rod from your hands.

There is another color called a browneye that you cannot buy anymore that catches a ton of fish also. It is a light golden color with a dark back and a large brown spot around the eye. I catch about as many on it as the reds.

Good luck

I was wondering where it went. I was in the General section and I knew when I posted it it might get moved to some other section. The problem was there is usually a "moved" tag for the thread but it was just gone. I was really wondering why you guys might have deleted it instead of moving it.

BTW Fishfordollars thanks for the great info!

The "Moved" notice is left up for new members, but after someone

has 10 posts, we don't leave a note. When I moved the thread, it

was lost in cyberspace so I tried to duplicate it for you. That was my

mistake, I did not mean to delete your thread.

No problem Roadwarrior your just doing your job. The only thing I don't understand is you went threw the trouble of moving it and then recreating it for me, but don't have any keys to victory for me ?? ;D :D ;D J/K!

Is the tourney on Lake of Egypt?

If so I'm in the crab orchard lass club at we usually don't fish there until sometime in march.

Let us know how you do and what you catch them on

Whew!  For a second there I thought RW had been converted and was going to fish a tournament in February. ;D

Ya it's the Southern IL Bass Busters club I'm in and it will be Egypt. I've found some websites and blogs with updated water temps on a pretty regular basis with some fishing type reports. About a week ago it said water temps at the north end where a little over 50 where the power plant is. I'll post my buddies results on his tournament thats Jan 30 and mine on Feb 9 but I'm sure March should offer around a 10 degree water temp increase compared to what we will be fishing. Right now I plan to focus on 1)Water temps, 2) Grassy wind blown points 3) Shad/Baitfish.

Simp,

I do not fish that specific lake, but I do fish two power plant lakes in So. Illinois-Coffeen and Baldwin. In my experience on both of these lakes is that it isn't necessarily key to fish the warm end of the lake. Fishing activity around the warm water discharges seems to be determined by current (if they are running water) more than the actually water temp. We have had success on both lakes I mentioned in Feb not even remotely close to the hot water discharge, and in 10-12 degree cooler water.

What got me was that I thought that RW had moved to IL!
