i grew up only knowing how to fish worms. recently i just learned some new tactics with flukes and wacky worm fishing. can you give me some tips on fishing with spinner baits and crank baits.

Well the basic thing to it is just chunk and wind, but you can add cadences to it if you want to.

Whew.............That's a lot to cover. I would suggest reading the fishing articles on this site. They are great and very informative! There are a ton of articles about both spinnerbaits and crankbaits. I would start there.

I feel with spinnerbaits you can accomplish the same thing with both kinds.

I suggest reading an article.  There are so many types and styles of cranks and spinnerbaits used for so many different situations.  Some are used just under the surface, such as double willow, or slow rollers on the bottom and so many different styles and dive depths of crank baits.

well thank you for your tips. I usually fish with baitcasting reals but i have been wanting to try out different techniques with spinning gear.

Use whatever your comfortable with first, id say if you want to expand your horizons use the spinning gear   with soft baits first, the reason i say this is because you can use soft baits that fish will grab, and you will have to do very little, im not saying this is always the case with regards to having to do little, but for example like a senko often you just pitch it out there and they take it on the initial fall, the reason for this is, it will give you sometime to get used to your new equipment, once familar with the gear use anything, in my particular case ive used only spinning gear my entire life, im going to join the baitcasting crew this spring, therefore im going to use lures that have the least techniques needed, that way i can focus on the reel and how to use it, bass can do most of the work, then ill learn the proper use of the reel to reel them in with the new equipment, for me it seems to simplify things for first timers getting used to new equipment. Nope for me fishing since i was five with and only with spinning gear ive had no problems setting hooks, how long has your cousin been using spinning tackle? Maybe he's just off on his timing and missing the hook sets

Sorry Zack that came off misworded and might of seemed arrogant, we all miss hooksets as do i, i just meant to say that i dont miss fish due to hooksets on a daily basis but yeah it happens to everyone

First off I would suggest read up on the articles like mentioned above.  Second, Get out there and start chucking and figuring out what works for the fish in your area.  Faster in warmer weather, slower in colder weather.  Slow down, speed up make it irrattic.  Have fun and keep working at it.

well my cousin has probably only been fishing with spinning gear for about a year. I guess thats the reason that he is missing so many. I think it might just be because those poles are not as stiff as others and hes not used to them. I keep trying to tell him that he needs to set the hook harder but he just yells at me and says "i am".

One thing that could help him with his missed hook sets is, with a baitcaster you (or at least I) usually use either a sweeping hookset, or a quick snap hookset.  My experience is that this will cause misses on spinning gear, although I'm not sure why.  Usually when I set the hook on spinning gear I move the rod tip straight up in a quick motion, and then I keep pressure on the line so the fish can't shake free.

What could also really help him, is somewhere on here Low Budget Hooker has a video posted on proper hooksets.  He uses mostly spinning gear, and gives good advice on how to set the hook.  Check it out with your cousin when you get a chance.

Welcome aboard, zack. I hope you find thi site as informative as I have. As to the spinnerbait thing, if you aren't comfortable throwing it on bc gear, use a spinning combo. I usually throw anything over 1/4 oz on baitcasting gear, less on spinning. There are exceptions to the rule, but spinnerbaits aren't in it. The best rule of thumb is to tie the lure on whtever you feel most comfortable throwing it on. As to your cousn missing bites on spinning gear, I would say to QUICKLY reel in all slack and set the hook in an upward motion. Point your rod at the fish when reeling slack, or more accurately reel down to the fish, then set the hook. This is similar to a hookset on a carolina rig. The only other thing I would add is to lighten up the hookset if the fish is closer to you. If you don't, you will break the line. Hope I could help.
