Spoon and Drop Shot

Featured Replies

Went out this morning for a little fun. Home lake has been kinda slow until I finally figured them out. I think it was me not knowing how to adjust. Fished from 5:30 am until sun was up high and the bite shut down hard. I trolled around looking for humps holding baitfish or marking fish. I accomplished 3 goals today.

1. Caught fish on a DT 20. (I never crank deep)

2. Caught fish with a dropshot. (First time trying this technique)

3. Caught fish on a spoon. (First time trying this technique)

Biggest fish was 4lb 12 oz. Total for the day was 31 bass and 2 crappie. Though I did not catch a whole lot of big fish it was good trying something new and it actually worked. I finally called it quits at 2pm when the air temp got over 90 and I wussed out. I dont think the A/C in my truck ever felt so good.

Nice!  Its always fun to catch fish with a new technique.  I still haven't caught a fish with a deep diving crankbait.  I've tried so many times, and I always give up on it and throw a jig or c-rig and slay 'em.

Never tried spoons, but I know I should.

Hey Kenny how deep were you fishing?  I have been trying hard to get some bass in the boat but I been having the same problem you were. The lake is about 20' deep were I have been fishing. I bought drop shot stuff but never tried it.  What structure was the bass most likely to be around?

They were located anywhere from 13' to 18' deep. These fish were suspended over and around a nice hump not far from a ditch line. I have always wanted to practice these techniques but never follow thru. I am glad I did just to get some experience fishing like this. I think the real key was baitfish everywhere.

Ok well I am going to do esactly what you did.  But I don't have those spoons just drop shot rigs

Good report -would like to know more particulars of the locations though. How high were the fish suspended? Were you marking fish and dropping to

them watching sonar -or just fishing the general areas?

Awesome learning, gaining confidence in new techniques -like money in the bank.

Congrats!

The fish were suspended about 4 to 5 feet off of the hump. Some higher and some a little lower. On my dropshot rig, my hook was about 3.5' from my sinker. I was marking the fish and dropping straight down using my sonar.

I agree. Find the bait, find the bass.

I wish I could learn how to find bait fish guys.  I don't know alot about my sonar device so is that what I need to learn to find the bait balls?  What if I can see the bait fish along the shore line will there be bass around them?

Thanks for the details Kenny. Always interesting.

Really you can rig your hook that high from the sinker.  I am headed back to Spruce Run tomorrow I hope to try some drop shot.  What are good bait to start with?
