Bait ?'s

Featured Replies

When you fish in a tourney, what baits and how many of them do you bring if you are a non-boater. Also how many rods have you brought. I just had a tourney as a non-boater, I had 5 rods set up and I had problems chooseing my baits when I had to tie something different on. What depths would you chose if you brought three crankbaits? The angler I fished with back boated me hard. Can someone please help me for future tourneys. Thanks in advanced.

I've had riders bring 10 rods on my boat before, that also depends on what size boat you're going on for the day. Some boats don't have a lot of room like others do you'll have to make that decision when you see what boater you're paired up with for the day in the morning before heading out.

You throw what lure your the most comfortable in. Also watch the boater he's going to that spot for a reason and throwing that lure. So watch him.

I don't change the lure on my rods thoughout the day often ( that's why you carry so many rods). I've already went through my tackle the night before and already made my choice on what to use. There's days when conditions change where you have to change throughout the day. I don't like wasting a lot of time just changing baits.

Crankbaits- I have 2 rods dedicated to just crankbaits.  I chose those the night before. (depending where the fish are deep, shallow, ect.)

Some boaters are complete arses.LOL  They don't want to help you in anyway.AND THEY WILL BLOCK YOU  Don't worry about these guys. just try and get through the day. Most guys you ride with will give some kind of game plan of what their going to do for the day first thing in the morning. Some guys will tell you what there using crankbaits, soft plastics, and what depth, ect. They might not tell you their exact lure their using for a competitive edge but they will help you.

Hope this helps

I am not sure what format you fish, but I meet my  boater the day prior to the tourney. I will talk to him about what we are fishing. Then by thinking about the specific lake, past producing lures, and strengths I will make my choices. I used to stick with them the whole day producing or not. I have switched from that and have been doing a lot more finesse as of late. Finesse includes shaky head, bitsy bug jig, dropshot, and senko.

I take 4 or 5 rods. What rods you take and what baits varies on many things. It will vary on season, your strength, structure, cover, depth, etc..

The back of the boat has its strengths and weaknesses. The boater has to use the trolling motor so in high wind sitiuations it is great being in the back of the boat. I never throw the same thing as the guy in the front unless he is catching fish after fish. I will often downsize and try to hit specific spots he misses or different angles. It is tough if you get backboated and you will need to play it by ear on the specific sitiuation, but somethings you can rig are c-rig or drag a tube deeper.

Instead of having 3 rods each with a crank on I suggest a snap so you can quickly switch.

There is sooo much info out there on back of the boat fishing. Check out BASS and FLW on their site.

Just curious but when you guys who fish in the back of the boat get screwed by the boat owner , do you say anything to him during or after the tournament ?

It has never happened to me, but I am prepared for it. The tournaments I fish it is hard to backboat me, but if it would ever happen I doubt I would say anything. I would show it in my tip for the day though $0.
