Guntersville...a cruel mistress she is

Club opener was last Friday/Saturday on the big G. Went down last Monday to get a feel for things. Ran in to Jason Williamson at Walmart, didn't get a chance to talk to him.

Woke up Tuesday to snow.

I didn't drive 350 miles for that. Did manage to make it out for a little while Tuesday evening after the snow stopped. Mostly just to run the boat and make sure everything was working.

Wednesday I met up with Bronzefly and we hit the water. Perhaps the coldest I've ever been while fishing. I don't think the mercury climbed above 32-33 and there was light snow all day. I didn't get a bite, but he got a couple. Just a rough day.

Big Tom rolled in Wednesday night and out we went Thursday AM.

Stopped at one of the spots where BF got a bite the day before. Working an xr75 through the grass, got a hit. Didn't think I had a fish at first as it wasn't really fighting. Finally felt a head shake. Tom's getting the net, gets into position, I start bringing her to the surface. Solid fish, 5-6 lbs. Get the fish to the net, line popped at the lure. Forgot to retie that morning after dragging that trap through shell beds the day before.

Tied on another bait, made a cast to the same spot. BAM, same thing, fish on. Everything worked on this one. Almost a twin of the first one.

Two fish like that in one spot, figure there's more there, so we get out to save the water. Hit a few more spots on both sides of the lake, found a place that looked promising on the map, so we made a run.

So far, the tally is two days on the water, three bites, two fish. Tough fishing, but had a few promising areas.

Up early Friday for the tourney. Cold cold cold. Boat got frosty on the 10 minute ride from the cabin to the ramp.

Hit the first spot, nothing. Second spot, nothing.

We covered a ton of water from Goose Pond to South Sauty, no luck anywhere. We couldn't have found a bite if it hit us in the crotch.

Oh well, everyone else had a tough day too. 16 lbs. lead after day one. Two other boats blanked, so we weren't the only ones.

Once again, Sat. morning was cold cold cold. Tried some different things, still nothing. Tom did manage to pull this whopper from under a boat house.

We decided to make a run, heading north to the 35 bridge. A nice cold run. Twas a good thing too, as Tom finally managed a bite.

In the end, that would be the only bite we would get during the tournament. And it guaranteed that we wouldn't finish last.

Took 25.56 lbs. to win our tournament, 25.12 for second. Big fish for the two days was a 5.4.

Fishing may have sucked, but at least we were on the water. Felt good to be out there as our last time out was on 10/10.

Don't think I'll go back to Guntersville during the first week of March. We've spent six days on the water there over the last few years and have only caught five fish.

I was there friday and saturday did a little prefishing friday one fish about 4 pounds got a limit saturday but it was only good for 10.75 but was enough to win our 15 boat club tournament

Too bad about the fishing,

but a great write-up anyhow!

There's always "next time".

Good luck, I'm sure you'll get 'em.

8-)

Next time might be sooner rather than later.

Next time is only 10 days away, at least we won't be trying to cover 65,000 acres of water.  Now just to remember BL wants to here "fish on" and not "get the *#&%^$ net" over and over. Of course after 20+ hours on the water with only one bite he's lucky I didn't just lift it with the rod and smack him in the face with it.  :D ;D

It is always a fun day just to be out on the water and get your line wet

where the next stop at?

We're fishing an Elite Series style schedule this year, so our next stop is on Falcon.

While that may be true after a five month layoff, if I'm not catching fish I'm not having fun.
