How a newbie got hooked...

Featured Replies

Two weekends ago i went out to my ranch and it was pouring rain but i still went fishing in the small creek that runs through our property.  I caught about six 1-2 pound bass which was a lot of fun.  then, Yesterday my dad and brothers and i went out to the ranch again to do some work and i thought i'd bring along my pole just in case i got the chance to get some casts in.  When my dad decided to take a break i headed straight for the water.  With a few casts with a spinner bait i had caught two small ones and a couple perch, then i changed to a Texas rigged worm and i could see this 2-3 pound bass looking at my worm in the water, then out of no where this HUGE dark cloud swoops down and my lure disappears.  This huge dark cloud was a 6 pound bass.  I started screaming and hollerin my dad said he thought i was drowning.  I had no idea there was a fish this size in our creek...it was one of the best things that's ever happened to me.  now i'm just fishing waiting for that next big one, that next big adrenaline rush.

Wow! Now thats one great way to get hooked!! Way to go!! Did you keep it? If you did you gonna get it mounted? If not gonna get a replica made? That will make a great conversation piece!!

no way i threw that bad boy back... give my friends and I an excuse to get back out there, the hope of catching the BIG ONE again

I've never had the priviledge of actually seeing a big one hit.  It must have been quite a rush!  Congratulations!

Sounds like a nice catch heres the story how I got lucky and caught my first bass.

I went out fishing on a day the weather went wild. It was nice then rain then snow. I got to the pond next to my house when it was nice out. I threw out a worm I am not sure what I should call the rig I used. I Fished all day till it started to snow. I then was getting ready to leave when i casted out one more time and caught my first bass it was 4lbs. It might not be to big but I also had a big adrenaline rush when I hooked that fish.

My family has started a new tradition of spending a week in Northern Wisconsin where the fishing is great.  It's not a fishing trip per se and I was never big into fishing though I would go out and try to catch some sunnies for a meal.  While I was out hunting sunnies I came upon a downed log and thought "this looks like one of those spots that all the bass fishing guys keep talking about finding fish."  So I switched over to a Texas rigged night crawler like I had read about and cast next to the log.  As my bait drifted to the bottom in 4' of water I saw my line move and gave it a tug thinking that I must have hit an underwater branch or something.  Sure enough I pulled out a 4lb bass for the first time ever.  I've been hooked ever since!

Now I'm trying to hone my skills so I can pass them on to my 5 year old son who is getting interested as well.

That's nice.. I've never caught that big of a bass. I've seen some swim right under my dock and bounced the hook on top of its head and it wouldn't move or bite. Just slowly swam on. Probably a 10 lbs, maybe the fish hate me. :'(

Congratulations dood! Sounds like your hooked! Fishing is like a box of chocalates, you never know what you might get(catch)!!!!!!!!! :-/

I moved up from the bronx when i was like 10 and i used to see every1 hunting, riding snowmobiles or quads and to my family that stuff was different.  So now last fall 5 or 6 years later i figure i am going to go buy a fishing pole and see why everyone says its so fun. I bought some spinners and went out on the lake. I didnt even catch a largemouth bass, i wound up catching like a 30 inch pickerel and it was so big my spinner hook bent and it fell right back into the water. Thats the best rush I have ever felt and i moved on to bass fishing.  I have been hooked ever since. I am just waiting to catch the big one.

YANKEE LAKE MELT ALREADY

I'm not sure why, but even though it took me a whole season to catch my first bass, I stuck with it, and caught my first bass one day on a jig n pig, and was hooked for sure ever since.

One thing everyone should do is fish a shallow pond during the spawn. Its fun to be on the shore and find a big ole 6 pounder and watch it carry the bait away.  It actually taught me how to "force" the bass to put the hook in its mouth!
