using spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

i'm a little new at this so please take it easy on me, but i was wondering if it is normal to add somekind of live bait to your spinnerbait lure, or should it be used on it's own.

i just use them on their own

Some guys use a trailer on the spinner bait and there are some made specifically for this purpose.  I don't suppose there would be anything wrong with trying a live bait trailer, although for the most part spinner baits are meant to mimic bait fish and having a worm or crawdad on the hook might seem odd.  You never know 'til you try it.

i just use them on their own

I have used spinnerbaits both ways with and without trailers. Caught fish on both! I never use live bait, just soft plastics.

I have never put live bait on spinnerbaits, first of all I don't use live bait and second it seems the live bait would get ripped off. Their are ways to modify spinnerbaits though such as....

1) Trimming the skirt so it will flare out more

2) Adding multiple skirts

3) Shorten the spinnerbait arm

4) Add a soft plastic trailer to slow the retrieve

5) And ALWAYS use a trailer hook

With the longer hooks on today's spinnerbaits, I rarely use a trailer.  More trouble than they are worth for me, especially in heavy cover. Live bait, no way. Trailers, if they help achieve a purpose of allowing you to retrieve slower to keep the bait up higher, or you just feel that a big silhouette is preferable.

I've seen lots of folks who just have no confidence in anything but live bait.  Better go fish with someone who is good at this craft to convince you that artificials can be oh so deadly!

hey Will does the soft plastic trailer make a signifigant change in its speed. i always use trailers on jigs, but i never have used them on spinnerbaits. also do you think it would be a good idea for a buzz bait.

Id strongly recomend a trailor hook seriously almost half my fish r caught on the second hook

Yes, the trailer will slow down the spinnerbait although I don't do it very much. I suppose it would also work on a buzzbait.
