Vertical TImber

Featured Replies

Anybody have suggestions for fishing vertial timber?  The timber I will be fishing looks like a bare forest.  There are NO branches on any of the trees, above nor below the water.  There timber is all about the same diameter, about 6-8in. through.  The water depth around ALL of the trees that I can find on this lake are in the 13-30ft. depth range, and are usually anywhere from the mouth to about the last 1/3rd of the creek/bay/pocket.

I will be fishing this area in the 1st and 2nd of October, so the bass will probably be starting into their fall patterns.

Thanks for any suggestions!

A great way to fish vertical wood is to pitch a jig or tube to one of the trees and let it drop straight down for about 10 sec. then shake it and let it drop again.

You may also want to try swimming a white jig through the trees, a senko, or a white spinnerbait

i like to cast a spinnerbait past the target,  reel in and intentionally let the spinner bump the timber( the more commotion  the better) then as you reel on thru let the spinner fall along the timber.  if the spinner bait starts to hang up,  keep cranking hard to break it thru.  dont stop cranking

Fish the outside edge with a jigging spoon or a jighead worm. If you can graph fish using the upper portion of the tree then you can tackle them with a crankbait or spinnerbait or count down a jig to swim by them. You could jig a rattletrap or drop a tube.(just other options)

Wacky rigged senko.....with weedguard hook.

You may not cover water very quickly but I guarantee you will catch fish.Bass will usually suspend in vertical timber, especially in the fall and a senko is just about the best bait for suspended fish.

A crankbait would be a good choice if the timber is not TOO thick for it to be effective. That does happen from time to time.

Maybe try running a Zoom Horny Toad around the timber and kill the bait when it is in what you'd think the strike zone to be. Just a thought.

There may be a lot of branches at the base of the trees that have broken off and settled to the bottom.  A T-rig or a jig-n-pig at the base of the trees might be just the ticket.
