fishing stained water advice!

Featured Replies

Need some of that expert advice. Grew up fishing high visibility lakes up North(Champlain,Saranac) but now I live down South and the water I fish is stained at best. It seems to me that most fishing techniques are taught with high(or a least some) vis in mind. T-rig is about the only success I have. Even my trusty blk/slv broken- back rap. is useless here! Any help would be great. Thanks

Nope, stained water is much easier to fish. Some will suggest brighter colors, but I fish natural and dark colors almost exclusively. If you are used to fishing smaller lures and finesse baits, you may want to kick it up a notch. I think you will find that every lure and technique you use in crystal clear water will work in stained water, too. Now you don't have to be quite so stealthy.

Thanks! I'll give that a try. I've been reading "downsizing" all summer for non aggressive bass. Bigger lure- easier seen(and heard) makes sense. May even keep those pesky 1 pounders off my line. Thanks for the help.

Well, I'm not a tournament fisherman. You saw the "keepers" the pros caught at The Classic. I don't fish for those fish, I never downsize. You'll still catch some small fish on bigger lures, but I think you have a better chance at quality fish.

Try fishing shallower than you would in your clear lakes.  Also try blue/black flipping jigs with spider collar rattles (extra attractant in that stained water).  Use a scent attractant as well.  This time of year the bigger the bait the better...for big fish.  Don't be scared to experiment with some big ol' chucks of pork as trailers.
