Fishing power plant discharge lakes in winter...

Featured Replies

I am going to be fishing a power plant discharge lake next week and I am looking for some advice.  I've never fished a lake like this before and it is still very cold up so I'm sure I'll probably be looking for the warmest water I can find.  Any suggesstions on what kind of lures/presentations to use in this situation?  I'm not sure how warm the water will be in certain areas but I'm going to guess around 60/70 degrees.  Maybe someone who's fished some power plant lakes might have a better idea.

I fish 3 - 4 different power plant lakes all winter long in the midwest.  The warmer water is good for numbers with late spring and summer type presentations, but the cooler water (45 - 60 degrees) is where you will find the bigger fish easier to catch with early spring and fall tactics.  Go with your confidence lures  in those scenarios and see how it goes.  Good luck!

I fished Merom last week and caught a 4.5 lber on a Lucky Craft RC 2.5 in MS American Shad in the standing timber.  You mught have more luck with a chartreuse model, but I was in love with the American Shad (it's beautiful!).  I wish I could tell you the water temp. but my temp. guage screwed up that day so I have no idea.  If I had to do it again I would probably try to deep crank some of the main lake points near the creek mouths and fish the timber again with the square billed crank and a jig/pig.  Good luck!

I am in the same boat. bout the power plant lake never fished one before but the water temp. at Sooner Lake, Ok is bout 46 but that wasn't by the plant so how much warmer is it by the intake and out take? But still i am excited bout the big boys in the lake. they better be ready to bite cuz i want some big boys. make sure you look at some maps them always help out. Good Luck tell us how it goes.

Is there any regulations on Merom as far as motor h.p. or anything?  Speed limit?  It's about a 1500 acre lake if I'm not mistake, right?

I think it's 1700 acres.  There is a 10hp limit.  There is a 1 bass/20" limit, but you would never keep a bass anyway, right?

Yeah, not looking to keep bass, just catch some. What kind of boat did you use when you fished it, if you don't mind me asking.

I have a beat up old 16' aluminum V.  It's a mid '60s ski boat that I modified into a fishing boat.  I removed all the cowling, tow bar, console, etc. and added an elevated casting deck and a bow mount TM, depth finder, etc.  I can beat the snot out of it and I don't care  :D  It's pretty awesome if you're not trying to look pretty or anything  ;D  I have an 8hp Merc on the back, too.  It takes about 15 minuted to get all the way from the ramp to the north end.
